Just to point out to Vectratot that I'm not quite that irresponsible about towing a heavy van. The max technical mass of my van was 1550Kg - that's with a load of 300Kg. The Freelander weighed in at 1691Kg so even fully laden (which I never am) I would be running at 91%. Well within the cababilities of the car (2000Kg towing limit) and me as a driver. I've never had any stability problems because of the weight - and am not complaining about MPG when I'm towing - it's an accepted part of going on holiday.
On a separate note.
No-one will ever convince me that loosing 10 to 15 MPG on a 500 mile trip is environmentally worse than jumping in a jet for 4000 miles to Tenerife and back.
Camping and caravanning must be one of the more environmentally friendly (except maybe for walking or cycling holidays) ways of going on holiday.
Consider how much less water, electricity and gas you use in a van or tent compared to what you use at home. 2 flushes of the loo at home is probably equal to your entire daily consumption of water in the van.
The enironmentally friendly partt of carvanning had niot crossed my mind - and I'm usually very ecologically aware.
Thanks for that. Useful to remember during the odd argument!
------------- best cheers
Frank

Whether you tow with a Mini or a great big 4 x 4, if you caravan you are keeping a lot of people in jobs and you are a boon to the local economy whereever you visit and you keep jobs going in that area.
If Gordon Brown forced us off the road, the consequences to a lot of small towns woGld be disastrous! That person wih the great big caravan and 4 x 4 could have 4 kids in tow who all want to spend the parents hard earned cash.
Beware of safety features, seen the fifth gear or top gear safety tests!!! one wouldn't walk away from a land rover crash!!!
Mr P
We use Rosemarie's Touareg, which is rated 5 by NCAP - as good as it gets.
We have towed caravans and VERY heavy horse trailers for years, with many different vehicles (4 Discovery's in all + Volvo's) and find the Touareg the best that we have ever used, including a Range Rover.
4wd, with snow tyres, also comes in very handy in Austria in the winter.

Michael
and it should be the best for the money they ask for them
Sorry not to agree with you madfrank but I suggest you check out Parkers .co.uk The TD4 has a kerb weight (according to them) 0f 1619kg (not 1691kg) and giving an 85% at 1376kg and with your van being at 1550kg I think it works out higher than 91%
I will take it seriously when the politicians do and start practicing what they preach!!!!!!!!!!!!! Meanwhile I like the view from up here when towing.
