I am sure I read somewhere that if all the cars in the world were taken off the road, it would only reduce co2 emissions by about 0.1%
I think all the cars in this country account for aboout 6% of which 4x4s are 0.1%. Planes account for a similar amount, it's industry that is the big poluter and where the effort should be concentrated. Cars are an easy target, 4x4s even more so as they are easy to see. Politicians concentrate on them as they win votes unlike doing anything about industrial polution.
Clearly not Ivan! We are an easy target, as has been said industry is a huge polluter but do they tax aircraft fuel? do they heck! And why? Because they are friends with all the airline bigwigs that's why and they all get treated favourably when they fly so they are not gonna bite the hand that feeds them, so to speak.
We need to refuse to fit boxes to our cars and boycott the fuel like they did before and stand firm until they back down but we are not like the French in that respect and just let it happen.

I wonder if the clowns in Bristol realise that it is ILLEGAL to put stuff under wipers on vehicles? I'd be reporting them if they'd done it to my completely legal, law abiding 4X4 gas guzzler...

Since when is it illegal to do that, i guess a traffic parking ticket under your wipers is illegal then.

Even at that figure, where do the government get their prices from?
6% of all pollution so lets put road tax up 30%.
As Snowy says, we are just an easy target who no matter how much we complain will still use our cars and the government know that.
Ok my slant on this, i drive 4X4 for towing the van it runs on veg oil in the warmer months i have to pay about 45-50p a ltr for the veg oil and the green government wants another 47+p tax on top at its current cost of diesel does this make it vaiable of just pointless i'll let you do the math.
China is hoping to open around one coal fired power station every day this year..... but the government wants YOU to turn off a lightbulb to save the planet, could someone tell me how many lightbulbs street lights/motorway lights are lit every night not aiding anyone. If this country and all its inabetants went greener than green and i mean no cars AT ALL wind powerd electric solar heating etc etc, we would make not a jot of difference to the global scale. the scare mongering is another way to leach another few pounds from the working man. how much energy is wasted producing metal in a foundry vast amounts i can tell yopu but are these places vilified nah. and most of the hatred of 4x4's is ill informed thought or just plain jelousy, i was asked once how many times have i used my car off road, my answer was about the same amount of times my mates scooby had been rallying nuff said.........

Why do Kamikaze pilots wear helmets?
Here here Firefly, exactly my thoughts on the whole global disaster debacle too. You can only make a change if the whole world buys into it but our friends across the pond coupled with the developing countries are merrily burning every fossil fuel they can so nothing will change. We will of course ultimately be in darkness here because this Government has done stuff all about replacing the outgoing nuclear power plants. They think we can run off of windfarms with a 30% effectiveness!! B Liar couldn't power one of his Bristol flats off of that let alone a whole blinking country. MUPPETS!
Kindred spirits unite! Sounds like we need a night around the bbq, swilling pink stuff and putting the world to rights.
Just don't get me on local councils: did anyone see the article in the press where Milton Keynes council tax payers are funding paid leave for council employees to attend classes to help them quit smoking? Or the bugs in the wheelie bins, speed bumps, permits to take your own rubbish to the tip (sorry, meant Recycling Centre)...
I'm either turning into a grumpy old man before I even hit 40 or the world's gone mad!
Nope the world has gone mad or else I am a grumpy woman before the age of 40! The thing is there are a lot of people that also share our views but they are not vocal about them and we need to unite and overthrow this government. Ali for PM!

Some years back a local club I was involved with wanted to do a leafleting campaign by leaving their flyers under car wipers in carparks. They were advised that this practice had been made illegal on safety grounds.
I thought parking tickets had to be stuck on the driver's side window.
I'll dig around a bit and see if I can find out more info...
a. Billboards, etc. Planning restrictions prevent the display of print advertising without the permission of the local authority responsible for town and country planning in the area in question. There is no planning restriction, however, on the display of print advertising in an enclosed place such as a football ground or railway station, nor is there any planning control on the use of print advertising on vehicles such as buses and taxis and inside public buildings.
Apart from planning law restrictions, the law of trespass prevents the display of advertising on the walls of buildings or on fences without the consent of the owner. There will be a trespass also if the advertisement over- hangs the property of another, or is distributed in a way which interferes with the property of another, for example by lifting a car windscreen wiper to put a hand-bill under it. Trespass is a tort {civil wrong) for which the property owner may recover damages from the trespasser or obtain a court order or injunction preventing further trespass. Affixing posters to property without the owner's consent can also amount to the criminal offence of criminal damage."
People keep on about gas guzzlers if that is true that all 4x4s are gas guzzlers and give out a lot of emissions. If I only did say 4000 miles a year in my 4x4 and a ford ka did 30000 miles a year then surely the ka would give out more emissions. So how can the government say my car is worse for the planet.

You're onto something here. Overdriving is the bigger emitter - I drive 17 miles to work, a distance my father would have thought ludicrous - for most of his working life he cycled to work. Yet I have numerous colleagues who drive more than 50 miles to work each day. A neighbour has an old Land Rover that he uses to move sheep around locally and probably does no more than a few hundred miles a year - why should he pay extra VED for owning it, whether he needs to to move sheep, tow a caravan, or just because he wants one?
