I don't know about the older, up to 2001 cars, but the CRV II auto when introduced had a lower maximum towing limit for the auto of 1200kg, compared with 1500kg for the manual. It also had a very low ball weight of 48kg. From the facelift 2005 model this was increased to 1500kg for the auto and the ball weight went up to 100kg (when the grille went from one 'chrome' bar to two). The new 2007 ones have higher limits still.
I didn't pull a caravan with my 2002 auto CRV but I did pull a loaded car trailer on occasion (possibly marginally overweight if truth be known) without problems from the power point of view - stability with a caravan I can only gauge from my present 2006 MY diesel version pulling an Eriba at up to 1200kg, not the most difficult caravan admittedly, but very stable.
Given that you mention a 'heavy' caravan it sounds as if you need a 2005 facelift model if anything. Bear in mind that at 1500kg you would be close to 100% towing ratio - the kerbweight is in the 1500-1550kg region for the petrol autos, so 85% would give you around 1300kg for comfortable towing.
