Has anyone towing experience with a new model Passat 2.0 Tdi [140PS] Estate?

Interested to hear how you find its towing abilities.

Thanks

Walter

Walter,

Don't know if you have already got one, but I heard that the towbars & electrics on these were extremely expensive (due to the onboard computers I think).

I currently drive one of the "old model" Passat Estate Tdi 130's, but at the rate I am putting mileage on it at the moment, I shall watch this thread with interest, as the lease company will not let it exceed 100,000 miles.

Dave.

if you have not had the towbar fitted from new then VW will charge 850 +vat to fit a VW towbar ! however if yuor willing you can fit a witter detachable one for £250 and there realy easy to fit ! already done one myself , you can get the towbar and electrics from the towequipe website, it requires a small cut in the under part of the bumber , to remove the bumper you have about 8 screws to remove and the bumber just slides off !

i have the 170 BHP TDI passat estate and its tows a dream so much power yuo need to hold back sometimes.

The Passats have the can-bus system as does many other new cars, this is a data type pulse system, do not be put off with this, the Passat is an excellent performer and you will have forgot about the price of the tow-bar long before you get bored with the car.

Thanks for the info. folks.

I had a Bosal towbar with twin electrics fitted by the VW Dealer for £225.  Tried the van hooked up and everything seems fine except that the rear parking sensors are not automatically cut out on hitching up.  It's a small hassle I can live with by switching off the sensors when engaging reverse gear.

Looking forward to the first journey with the caravan.  It certainly is an impressive car to drive solo.
