We have decided to get a small lidded trailer for the next year camping. I was wondering if its okay to leave the tent in the trailer ( the airbeam tents are so huge ) between trips and over the winter. Will it go mouldy or damp?
Just wondered if other people do this and if it's okay.

Can the trailer be in the dry (e.g. garage?) with the lid off? Assuming the tent is absolutely dry too, of course. It could get just as fusty if you took it out of the trailer & left it somewhere without heating & no air circulation & in contact with a damp floor.

Hi, we were planning to leave the trailer outside, as we dont have a garage. The tent is currently in a shed and we haven't had any issues so we assumed it would be a similar environment. Thanks for the reply

I save all the silica gel sachets that you get with lateral flow test, plus any other sachets that come with various appliances( I get the rest of the family to collect theirs.)

These then get put in net bags ( from garlic or onions etc). These bags are then interspersed in the folds of our awning and in any other areas - tool boxes, caravan cupboards, bicycle bags and so on.

Providing there is some ventilation in your trailer with the lid on, there should not be a problem. Remember to have the trailer tilted to help rain runoff.

My guess is it would be fine in Summer when there will be very little condensation but not OK in winter when you can remove items such as tent etc which can go mouldy but leave things which probably don't.

That suits with usual camping season and perhaps you can keep tent in loft or similar.

Thanks everyone for the replies, I agree that during the summer it will be fine, so I may have to find indoor storage for the winter months.

People store folding campers and trailer tents outside all year round so theoretically it's possible to store a tent in a (waterproof) lidded trailer.

If you ensure the tent is bone-dry (as you'd do anyway), then roll in a good amount of big bubble wrap and tape it up, it will be well protected against damage by condensation. If you can then raise it off the trailer floor (a couple of bits of wood would do) then it should be fine.

Make absolutely sure the trailer is waterproof (such as an Anssems) and - as has already been said - raise one end to facilitate rainwater runoff. A tarp or cover fixed over the trailer would add another layer of protection for both tent and trailer.

(I have to be honest here and say, keeping a tent outside in any trailer would be a last-resort storage option for me but, if I had no other options, I'd do the above, along with Stuart's excellent silica gel sachets recommendstion.)

Best of luck with it, whatever you decide!

Thanks everyone, unfortunately we just don't have much indoor storage for a large family tent.
We have just purchased a secondhand 122 lockable lidded trailer, ( it was a bargain, hardly used). So we have a few months before we will be using it, so we can double check that it is waterproof before we put the tent in it. I think all we can do is take on all the suggestions given. We will put a floor in the trailer to raise it up and also get some sort of condensation absorber to keep it as dry as possible, which was an excellent idea.
I appreciate its not ideal but needs must.
Thank you everyone.

We store a lot of our camping equipment, including the tents, in a trailer but we have the advantage of being able to keep our trailer in a dry garage very kindly provided by some friends.

I don't know how feasible it would be from a location and cost point of view but is using a commercial storage facility an option for you, even it was for the winter period only?

You can make a big silica gel sachet using silica cat litter in an old sock.
