I have been looking at tailgate tents to supplement my usual tent. I am buying a car next year and was going to go for a hatchback similar to a Focus or Golf. A lot of the tailgate tents I have seen only seem suitable for SUVs or vans. Its only going to be for two people (and one small dog) and I’d like to stand up in it (6ft).
Any advice on this, is it best to go for an SUV - If so I was thinking something like a Peugeot 2008 or VW T-ROC.
I've seen a tailgate tent with a hatchback car (a Corsa I think it was) and I didn't really understand the purpose, there was very little space gained and much faffing about whenever the user wanted to go anywhere in their car. Can you stand up in the tent you have now? If not then would getting a Focus-sized car and a larger separate tent be an option eg a four man air beam that you can stand up in?
If you're considering a T-Roc then have a look at a Dacia Duster or Dacia Jogger. You can sleep in the back of a Duster - been there done that!
Have a look at drive away awnings for campervans. They’re a lot more sophisticated than the “Caranex” ones, which look pretty basic & more suited to day trips than camping holidays. You can close the vehicle side when you head off for the day.
