We are planning to buy fresh everyday, and keep a supply of tins for emergencies. As for the milk in tea, I will purchase a box of the long life milk pots from Makro, (like the ones you get in supermarket cafes) one pot usually does me for 2 cups of tea, so that will keep me happy in the morning. Not the best milk, but will do the job, we use them when we go out for a long day trip and make up a flask of tea.
We don't have EHU or a fridge, we have a gas heater, but to be honest we just get into bed when it gets too cold. We manage to keep our milk cold using a cool box and ice or ice packs.
We are considering buying EHU simply to recharge all the bl**dy batteries!!
but i think its best with as u can whip up some chips quick in a deep fryer so can cook veg etc on stove
as for tv i took mine with me and the WEEK i was away there was race rioting in my area (preston) and a couple of killings so wished id left it at home or stayed on hols longer not knowing anything
was a little worried what would be left of city wen i got back sounded like basra
you can buy those small fridges(holds bout 6 coke cans) so if u buy small 1 pint milk then that surfice
You certainly don't need EHU. Although, having used a hook-up for years in my parents' caravan I can see the advantages, particular in the colder damper months in the UK.
We mostly camp for the weekend (2-3 nights, Easter to late September) and take a good quality cool box with lots of frozen goodies. Beers keep nicely chilled in buckets of water. It's going to be a bit of a challenge in France in August for 2 weeks, but we're planning on buying fresh as often as possible and re-stocking the ice daily. Should be fine and is all part of the fun IMO.
Can recommend the Typhoo white powered tea - surprisingly drinkable! And saves the need for milk - in fact I think it tastes better than when using long-life milk in real tea.
For other cold stuff, freeze as much as you possibly can before you go - including several 1 pint plastic milk containers. Keep everything that is meant to be frozen as undisturbed as possible in the shade and possibly in a breeze. Run a second smaller cool bag for chilled stuff and using a defrosting milk carton out of the 'frozen' cool-box as the 'ice-pack' to keep it cool. Have had to wait for bacon to defrost after 5 days using this method!!
another idea if u not already got 1 is an adapter that goes into the cigarette lighter to make it multiple connectors so u can connect an electric cooler box that u can use while on the move
I will have to fight the kids for the cancer stick lighter as they keep the dvd player plugged in ! then invariably himslelf (who could have charged his phone at home but as usual forgets) wants to plug his phone charger in, if I suggested I need it for a cooler WW3 would break out
I think i better butt in here, hi, this is pauls mate, (the tight fisted one) paul wos right when he said i got a ciggy ext, and it was a cheap double one ,not a treble, but what he forgot to say was that, just as we were setting off to go away, the women folk said they could smell something, on investigation we found that the thin ext wires were red hot , and i think it could have caused a FIRE,. we were lucky, we unpluged it and got rid of it, we did get another which cost a bit more, but its better to be safe than sorry, AS WITH EHU,s also. (you get what you pay for) ! ! ! ! ! Bob
Two years without EHU with no problmes. OH wants it this year coz she got nothing else to buy.
Two years of using a cool bag with freezer blocks. Big huge blocks and get them rer-frozen on site (normally for about 20p). This year now she getting EHU we got ellecy coolbox (and heater and she getting George Foreman grill inside of suticase gas cooker and kettle and toaster and Tv and .............)

------------- It'll work out in the end!!!!
I didn't do it !! Nobody saw me do it !! You can't prove anything !!
We are newish to camping but went with the basics, no EHU. I felt that was part of the fun. Kids 6 and 4 with no TV, DVD, playing like kids should. Running, climbing trees and paddling. OH and I chatting to the late hours after 11 years of marriage! Trip to the villiage shop for the milk. I would recommend you go without because if you buy everythilng first you wont know if you enjoy camping without all the extras. Not having, TVs, DVDs, toasters, heaters, electric kettles etc etc was all part of the fun (sounds mad but true) and I would never have know that before I went.
I will deffo not take a tv if we ever do get EHU, we usually keep the dvd in the car, great for long journeys. himself doesn't talk to me, usually too busy reading. and we have been married for 18 months LOL (though been together 18 years.)
I've found it easier to book a pitch without ehu for whit bank hol - everywhere I tried to book with electric was full. So we'll be leaving the ehu kit behind and reverting to ice blocks in cool box etc. Nice to have ehu but not essential.
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
