Spent the last three days at Downshay, in the top field. The wind was pretty bad but pitching close to the dry stone wall under the trees helped no end. About the only problem was the uphill walk back from the toilets. That and the occasional rain of shotgun pellets from the woodland the other side of the wall.
We are at Lychett Manor, Dorset. Have been here since Sunday. Weather is a mixed bag. Had bad wind, so to speak, and much rain, mostly overnight. But today is glorious sun. Have made it to the beach twice this week so far, so it's not all bleak. At least the Bear Lake has held it's own in the wind so far... Another week and a bit to go.. Moving to St Ives tomorrow... Just looked on BBC, weather doesn't look much better for next week, but you got to make the most of it!
Gotta go, my 20 minutes on the reception PC is up...
If it makes anyone feel any better...we were in Great Yarmouth in a caravan for 2 weeks...(gave my tent up last yr after an horrendous week at whitsun) and the wind was awful.....I thought it was just there as previously this yr whilst we have been there it has been windy but sounds like everyone is suffering the same..
My van up for sale the end of Sep.....We're off abroad next yr,....
We got to Freshwater beach last saturday too, got really rained on putting tent up but managed it in record time thanks to Dibs (a very nice man who helped up set up!) and stayed dry through out..(thanks to the old faithful indy)
We were right at the edge of the caravan field and were fully exposed to the sea "breeze" for 2 days (and scary nights). A few people packed up early having lost parts of tents or awnings...I saw the full extent of the wind squish our neighbour's orchy back end, so much so it looked like the whole tent was about to be flattened, then it popped back up again!
We stuck it out however and ended up with the best few days camping we have had so far...really enjoyed it and the kids spent a lot of time in the sea or pool for the rest of the week..
The direction of the wind had changed with the weather and putting down this morning was lovely. The breeze was gentle and the sun shone all the time.
Happy that we stayed, I was almost ready to give up after 2 sleepless nights, but in the end we had a great time.
we are going back for more of the same (see earlier posts) but i am a bit worried about the beginning of the week.
We could wait for better weather but apart from having paid up front i love it on the first day when the fields are fresh and covered with flowers and no tyre tracks :)
crossing all fingers and toes we won't be coming home on wednesday!
Sorry to read this, we experienced the same last April south of the lakes on a coastal site. Snapped pod poles meant partial tent collapse and evacuation to the car.
Did it put me off? Did it heck. Metal-poled tent now and more experience (should have moved tent on hearing wind forecasts).
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
