An hour or so if it's just a weekend or thee/four nights. We're lucky enough to have plenty of really good sites to choose from within that radius. I can't be bothered with all the driving. We save that for the summer, ugh.

Two hours max, usually with a weekend/couple of night camp you don't take too much gear,so its usually a quick set up when you arrive.

I am based in Wiltshire, and went to Norfolk for a 5-night stay recently to visit friends and family. Took my 4h to get there and 5h to get back.

I have a 5-day trip down in Dorset coming up in Sep, which is shorter distance from home, about 2h.

I do not believe it is worth the effort for any trips less than 5 days myself, regardless of the distance away from home, as it took nearly 4h for me to pitch up the first time on my own, and 3h to strike camp and load everything into the car.

I am planning to go camping in France soon, if the exchange rate with euro improves. I would set off from home early evening, with the aim to cross the Channel by tunnel at about 22:00h UK time (I hate going by ferries or cats, too many children!), and stay overnight at a dog-friendly Ibis hotel by Cite Europe. I shall set off around 08:30h after a good night's sleep and a strong cup of coffee for breakfast.

Hopefully I shall reach my campsite sometime in the afternoon at about 15:00hish, with pit stops along the way for food and provisions, and to let the dog out for a little walk etc...

There is also a plan to drive to Spain in 2010 for a big MINI gathering, and I shall drive there from Calais, stopping at Ibis hotels in France along the way, as I love that chain of budget hotels and is my hotel chain of choice when I am in France. It may cost about the same as going by ferry, and may take longer. However, the idea of being stuck on a boat for a day full of children running around fills me with dread! And I doubt Borda the dog would like being stuck in a cage in the kennel for 20 something hours!
