I suppose in an extreme emergency that would be OK, but who is going to carry such gear against the chance of such a need?

Secondly wouldn't the chafing against the fabric of the tent be likely to cause damage, particularly on synthetic fabrics? Caravan awnings tending to be made of more robust materials.
