I agree with all of the above, with the exception of festival camping. When you leave your setup at one of the very large festivals, don't expect any of it to be there when you get back! And sleep with your arms around your handbag and mobile phone, and swallow your credit cards before you turn in. (Don't forget the dose of syrup of figs so you get them back promptly in the morning!) Large festivals are not usually camp-friendly places, although there are exceptions. You'd have to take advice from a regular before attending one, I think.
But on ordinary campsites, I've never heard of anyone having anything nicked. There's always someone about, and the knowledge that there could be any number of suspicious eyes on your tent at any given time would be enough to put off a would-be thief. Campsites don't attract villains, because frankly they do better trade by staying in the towns and cities. And you'd have to be very brazen to enter a closed-up tent. Grandma could still be inside, with her security football rattle! Or there could be a honeymoon couple in there... say no more...
Enjoy your camping. You really don't need padlocks.

Hi Bryan , welcome to the forum (1st post) ,what people mean is put valuables in the boot of your car so they can't be seen and they are with you , they probarly would be ok left in the tent but hidden out of sight in your car is safer , most camping stuff is to large to pinch and requires a selective market to sell to so not really worth the risk as they would have to bring a vehicle on site to pinch it , and with so many possible eyes watching it isn't worth for them , but smaller valuables like laptops,phones etc etc are easier for thieves .
Just to re-iterate was has been said above, we keep our valuables in a holdall, car keys in my handbag etc. so that they are easy to take with us and to take into the bedroom at night, We have camp beds so the bags go under the beds.
The other thing I am always aware of is that if there was an emergency it is then fairly simple to grab the bag of valuables and leave the tent without scrambling around looking for various bits and bobs!
