We went last night to test out the new tent, it was cold - it's the first time i've been so early in the year. Despite layers of clothes and blankets (on the bottom and the top - of the sleeping bags I mean not us , it did get nippy. I think we under estimated how cold it might be. I'll put it down to experience, there a few things i've learned so I know what to do next time!!!
I'm taking our youngest off to Thetford CCC for the night tomorrow & have opted for non ehu, this will be the second trip as we spent easter a Deers Glades (those who are going won't be disapointed we booked to go back in June whilst we were there ) we just double bagged the boys & slung a duvet over our sleeping bag, warm as toast
If you wait for the weather the summer will be gone, only High winds would make us cancel a trip?
Oh no............we went last week and yes it was a bit nippy later on, but the heater was on and we were fine. We just took extra blankets for on top and below the air beds.
My OH was not looking forward to it given the conditions the week before we went (and the fact he is not a happy camper) but even he agreed it was fine.

April - Filey - no tent :-(

Me and my family are going on our first camping trip tomorrow through to monday I'm worried about the cold but we're going anyway if its too cold we will pack up and come home early
came back today and glad we went away as the weather was very kind to us, sun and blue sky all the way, shame the trip didn't go as planned. Rang up Dale Bank Holiday Park at Silsden just because the location on the map looked right and it accepted daily mirror vouchers. DO NOT GO!!!!! Cannot stress enough waht an awful place this is, we did not stay instead retreated to Holmfirth ouir old stand by. I'll write a review of the other place at some point, but trust me, if you ever feel you've been at a rotton site go there and have a look you'll feel much better...
We were camping last week. The nights were quite cold, but once the tents all zipped up and the bedroom pod and the sleeping bag, then we were really very snugly and warm.
We just got back from our first camping weekend of the season and it was great!
We were on a non-commercial site in Northamptonshire, so no facilities to speak of. We don't have EHU anyway, but had bought a bluecat heater and didn't actually use it.
As the evenings drew in and the sun disappeared, we put a couple of layers on, lit the campfire, and we were warm and toasty. The inside of the tent was really cold, but we both have good quality military surplus sleeping bags and self-inflating mattresses, and once inside the sleeping bags we were warm enough all night, even though there was a frost on both Friday and Saturday nights.
The days were gorgoeus, warm and sunny with a gentle breeze, and we even got to pitch and take the tent down dry! We couldn't have asked for more.
We camped this weekend just gone too our first ever trip us and our kids age 5 and twins of 3. The first night I was a bit cold, but a little unprepared maybe and worried the kids would either freeze or suffocate in their mummy sleeping bags. Once the sun went down it was cold. The second night (not put off by the first as the kids were fine) I got everything ready for the night time in the late afternoon, put picnic blankets on the floor then the air beds or campbeds, then a blanket, then thick sleeping bags and a double duvet. No one complained about the cold and I slept really well. We were also dressed in loads of layers too, I had on a t-shirt, long sleeve t shirt, hooded top (which I slept with the hood up) and fleece and jogging bottoms on, kids layered up too. My thoughts were there is a couple of layers of material between me and the outside so I really should 'dress for the weather'! We were only 30 mins from home so at any time we could have driven home and then I could have come back the next day for our stuff. Just camp close to home if you can incase you need to leave. Yes the nights are cold but if you are prepared you are fine and all the activities we did, kites, bikes, running about etc cooking outside made it a great time away. There was frost on the tents the first morning not the second and we did check the forecast first which was pretty good. We got suntans too!
GO for it as long as the weather is not too cold.
We needed a final push and the friends we went with and people on this forum gave us it and we are so pleased.

We went the weekend before the one just gone and it was beautiful and really mild (for time of year) at night. I think its the overnight temp you need to check before heading out as at this time of the year you can get stunning sunshine by day but ice cold evenings. We were really lucky but we only decided on the Thurs night to go because of the changing weather. Ive noticed that the evenings are cold for the next few days - we are also going away May bank hol so hopefully there will be another upturn in the weather by then - but May normally is quite nice - fingers crossed!! It will have to be pretty bad for us not to go though.
Our beds set up seems to be really good as we are never cold in bed despite having camped in freezing temps but its the evenings between the kids going to bed and our bedtime where we have suffered. Last Easter I even bought a fake sheepskin rug to put under our feet where we were sitting in the tent to prevent the cold coming up through the groundsheet & carpet - it does really work though and the kids loved to sit on it and play - even if it did look a bit 1970s!
We were wearing thermals, 2 pairs of jogging pants, sweatshirt, fleece, zip up fleece and I had slipper socks inside my mammoth crocs - and by day we were in shorts & tshirts!!!
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
