A self inflating mattress is just that. You should not fill it with extra air, you could separate the foam from the skin. All self inflating mattresses (even the thermas) are not designed so that your elbow could not feel the ground when leaned on. This is a common misconception about self inflating mats. The Thermarest FAQ page says this (emphasis mine):
[snip]...Always allow self-inflating mattresses to inflate on their own as much as possible, then just top them off with a few breaths at the end for added firmness....[/snip] (taken from the "Will moisture build-up and ruin my mattress if I blow into it?" question).
