We once went up to the Blue Dolphin site one Easter many years ago when it first opened, before the Haven company was even invented, and although it had been cool, it had been very sunny and dry the day we arrived so we pitched our then 'the norm' lol ridge tents side by side and OH slept in one with our youngest daughter, and I slept in the other with the other two. we settled down well for the night but by morning the wind had got up and the tents were taking a bit of a battering to say the least, so we snuggled down in our sleeping bags until it broke full daylight, which seemed to take ages. When we did venture out we discovered the darkness was due to the tent being a few inches deep in snow, ours had survived the weight of this but Ohs had part lost its fly sheet and they were still asleep covered by only the inner which was now dripping with icicles hanging from it guy ropes. luckily we had all been in 4seasons type sleeping bags, so we had managed to stay warm, but it was clear we couldnt carry on with our trip with weather conditions as they were.
We decided to pack up, but needed several water containers of hot water from the toilet block to thaw out the ice on the tents before we could get the pegs out and pack away, by this time we were all freezing cold, and i still remeber to this day the bad 'hot aches' i had in my hands as i put the cars heating on full blast and headed down into Bridlington to find a cafe for some much needed hot drinks and food before we started the long drive home south through the icy roads and onto the better cleared and gritted M1 motorway.
This was the first time OH had been camping since he was in the boyscouts many years before, but luckily it didnt put him off, and a couple of years later we bought our first caravan together, an Avondale Adonis, and we have been camping and caravanning on a regular basis ever since, with a variety of set ups and units as our family needs changed and grew, although its me whos the real camper at heart, i owned my own Caravan before I met OH, and i still love the adventure and uncertanty that the hobby brings each time we hitch up and set off on another journey today.

About 15 years ago my then boyfriend and I arrived at a campsite in the South of Scotland on a very wet day. The reception was in the bottom of a little dale, and while I was waiting in the car, he went in and unfortunately took the car keys with him.
While he was in the reception building, suddenly a big wave came sweeping down the way, and I found myself in a middle of a lake! Didn't dare to open the car door fearing the water might come in, couldn't start the car, because my boyfriend had the keys... So I opened the window and screamed HELP!
The warden and my boyfriend ran out of the building and were startled, the warden told they had never had a flood before. My boyfriend got very wet shoes, socks and trousers... But luckily he could start the car and drive out of the "pond".
We pitched our tent at the highest point we could find, but it was on a slope, and in those before-SIG-times it meant a stream was running through our tent. We stayed in the sleeping pod, trying to get warm and dry again.
Next morning we found the tent was filled with slugs - they even were on the flysheet.
So on the day we were to leave Scotland, we had had our "Scottish" rain - we had been lucky at Loch Ness with sunshine and 30 C!

My worst moment was actually sitting right here, at my computer, reading the message board. We'd gotten back from a windy stay on the coast. One day my husband was worried that the wind was so strong the tent might blow away, so he didn't want to leave it. We all sat inside (to weigh it down) and played games for the afternoon. Next door had their poles snap and ours felt pretty hairy at times, but it was nothing compared to getting back and reading a post from someone who's tent had blown away with them and their entire family IN it. The horrified realisation that sitting in a tent in those winds was actually a really really stupid thing to do brought me out in a cold sweat!
Last year my parents pitched up at a site with no problems, however their 'neighbours' and children arrived and started setting up, only to find they'd only brought the inner tent with them and no weatherproof outer, so the poor Dad had to drive two hours home to get it while the Mum and kids had a four hour wait in not great weather for his return.
I think I'd have popped to halfords and bought a cheapy tent and saved myself thenjourney and the fuel!
Llanrystyd, I ended up sleeping with the 2 girls whilst our son slept with his Dad, as it was so windy etc. 1/2 way through the night James woke and asked "are we still on the ground?" It has put me off the sea front campsites

In Devon in 2009 with our friends. His wife's first camping trip. They have 3 children the youngest only 4 at the time. We pitched, wet & muddy. We went out for the day and when we came back 2 families had arrived and had pitched so close their guy ropes were under our friend's tent! Suffice to say the ignorant lot stayed up drinking and swearing. Our friend asked at 3 am to please stop swearing and be quiet. No such luck!
To be fair the owner gave our friend his money back and told the 2 families to leave.Too late though our friend's wife insisted they packed up and has never camped since.

Oh reading these stories I think we have been lucky!! Have had camping trips where it has rained endlessly, have had storms and once had a family next door who decided to offload their child onto us for the whole weekend. I forgot the air bed bung once and another time forgot all our pillows.
I also got lost coming back from the loo one night with no contact lenses in and another time got scared witless by a rabbit following me through the undergrowth to my tent in the dark - again I had no contact lenses in.
BUT we have never had any major disasters and none of these things spoilt our holidays!
I remember back in the days of our trusty ridge tent getting water in the tent a few times but in those days you kind of accepted that if it rained heavily you would get wet.
