We have always cooked outside under our canopy. We leave our Campingaz Chef out there and our Cadac. We cover them over when not in use. We've never worried about them being stolen.

Have always cooked outside as below under a tarp if weather a bit iffy.
Never (so far) had anything go missing.



But I have now got a Royal Utility Tent (yet to be tried) as the tarp took a hammering on Exmoor last October.

Very sensible to think of the childrens and your safety, we never cook inside the tent, smelly and far too risky, we purchased one like this from eBay for about £25 a few years ago, keeps everything nice and dry in inclement weather.
