we had a roofbox, and a trailer, that was pulled by a 1.4 ceed (non estate) with 5 people (2 adults 3 teenages) roofbox like other threads was for the lighter stuff, and windbreaks, you are governed by the roofbox limit about 50kg, we used to put the heavy stuff in the trailer, tents and all the other bits, clothes in the boot of the car, obviously being a 1.4 it did struggle on inclines, but we were never pulled by the boys in blue, providing your careful and dont overload, you should be ok. As with everything you adjust over time, we decided last year to ditch the trailer and ceed, and now have a citroen berlingo and roofbox, which doesnt govern us to 60mph unlike with the trailer.
I'm sure your be fine what ever you decide on. Safe trip!
We have a Citroen Grande Picasso Exclusive with a roofbox full of bedding, towels and clothes an we tow a Raclet Marathon/Sprinter with a roof box and two bikes on top. Currently we are 2 adults, a teen and 3 Labs.We know we are within our loading capacities and drive accordingly. We checked both with our local garage and a friendly PC and were told all was in order.
Your car will have:
Gross weight. The total weight of the car fully laden, including roof rack and noseweight on the hitch.
Gross train weight. The total weight of the car and trailer. This can be lower than gross weight + tow capacity.
Rear axle weight. The load on the rear axle. With a lot of weight at the back of the car (especially if it has a significant rear overhang) it is possible to overload the rear axle whilst staying under the Gross weight.
Go over any of them, and you are overloaded.
Somewhere in the manual it should also give you a roof load. This is often 75kg. Lots of weight high up can mess with the car handling.
------------- My opinion is worth exactly what you paid for it.
A lot would also depend on what you had in trailer/roofbox as this would affect the weight. Stuff could be bulky and take up a lot of space, but at the same time be fairly light weight - things like my portapotti take up space, but don't weight that much.
As others have said, the only way to judge is to look at eh laden weights of your car. and the gross train weight.
