Our bed consists of roll mat, Air bed, mattress cover, sheet, 4 season double sleeping bag and feather duvet - even in summer.
I usually just sleep in a vest, but make sure I don't get cold in the evening. Usually as soon as it starts getting a little cool it's on with thermals and PJ's. I also have a camping fleece over my PJ's.
Ok....I may not look glam.....but at least I get a good nights sleep. :-D

Cashmere! I got a cashmere hoody as a gift a few years ago but it sadly became felted and shrunken over time (RIP). Luckily I got a new one and I'm so glad because camping season just isn't camping season without one! It's lightweight so you don't feel bulky and has built-in climate control. Having a hood just takes the chill off in the evenings and if I feel cold around the shoulders in bed I put it back on! Highly recommend, though admittedly expensive. Also we have a wool blanket which as you would expect out performs polyester fleece in most situations, though we have loads of them too!
Cor, Id melt if I went to bed in all the gear some of you sleep in! We use foam interlocking mats under our sims, and outwell camper lux sleeping bags zipped together to make a double (but only zipped together along the bottom, as Im a feet out of the covers kinda girl). As for sleep wear, its normally a vest/t shirt for me, and pants for the OH. I keep a ikea fleece on either side of the bed in case we get cold, but in 6 trips I dont think they have ever been used in bed!

I think I would too..
We have a small fleece under the air bed (an airline freebie), fitted sheet and open sleeping bag. We both sleep in our pj's. We have layers at the side if we need them (jumpers, ikea fleeces) but rarely use them. Kids have same set up, but they have closed sleeping bags and fleece onesies too.

Thin foam mats under the airbed, fleece blanket on top, sheet, down duvet and a thick quilted blanket on top. Being warmed up befor going to bed is a good idea, but not a hot drink - you will have to get up in the middle of the night, and get cold...
For me the biggest problem is how to avoid a cold nose - I just can't sleep with a cold nose. So either I sleep lying on my side and use the duvet to build a nice warm "cave" around my face, or I put a light scarf over my face.

Keeping warm at night topic has been done several times on the forum and i find most people will nearly allways end up with whatever gear they think is best even if it is not.
I am 58 hubby is 66 been camping together for 40years never had a cold nights sleep in all that time.
Think our choice of gear has a lot to do with the fact that we were backpacking for most of that time
As for wearing clothes when sleeping we wear the same when camping as we do at home the birthday suit it is free and lasts you for life we have two 2 season mummy sleeping bags(zipped together) which we use for most of our camping also have two 4 season bags made by mountain equipment for winter oh! and you never see polar explorers using duvets and fleece mats so if one sleeping bag is good enough for them why should we need more in uk climate
As for air beds wont use them you cannot beat a good quality sim anyone who has tried a sim and says no good must have bought the wrong one we use thermarest basecamp 50cm thick for car camping and thermarest say using one of their sims adds 1 season to your sleeping and it does.
What it comes down to in the end is your choice but do not forget try to buy the best sleeping gear you can as you alone have to camp with the gear you buy but please do a bit of research first google is your friend.
There is nothing worst than being cold at night has put a lot of people of camping.
A guy from go outdoors told me to put em on the top of airbed. I did think that was strange but didnt want to argue with the 'professional'. OK so mats, airbed and then sheet or fluffy blanket. I didnt want a sleeping bag as I thought my wife and I (and 2 year old daughter) will all be in the same bag so thought duvet would be best.
Any shop recommendations for cheapish thermal gear?
We share our bed with our 2 yr old daughter too. We still have sleeping. bags though and a duvet on top. OH has a gelert pod, she likes the room. Daughter has the vango nightstar junior, I have the adult nightstar. You'll prob find it a squeeze and wake up on the floor freezing at the side of the air bed. Or is just my 2 yr old that manages to push me out of bed

I wear anything from nowt at all to thermal pj's with fleece pj's on top, hat and scarf (plus a sleep mask to stop the light from waking me up - it's such a good look!)
I make sure I don't get cold during the evening and slip into my bed wear early on so I don't get cold while changing. Then I peel off layers until I'm the right temperature.
It's very difficult for us as OH never feels the cold and could happily sleep in snow under a net curtain. I'm a chilly mortal and being cold makes me VERY miserable. He sleeps with the zip undone on his side of the sleeping bag and his legs sticking out!
I disagree with arsenaldes (sorry), duvets are great for camping and add a little bit of home comfort. I can't stand sleeping bags, they're too claustrophobic and I get tangled up in them. Agree that the foam mats should go under the airbed though, on top I'd go for a fleece blanket with a sheet on top of that.
