They just apologised and said nothing they can do, don't suppose there is a great deal they can do to be honest. Police were great especially coming down to see us. Would not get that service from our local station.

I know this is rare but wanted to share with you. About four years ago ourselves and two other families hired out a windmill in Norfolk. Had a day at the beach in Hunstanton and upon our arrival home discovered that we'd been burgled. A host of things including three laptops, mobile phone, 6 Nintendo DS, Watch and Ring. Miraculously ALL of it was recovered. The idiot had gone to the pub with ours and a whole load of other people's things stashed in his boot. Police saw him leaving the car park that eve and pulled him over for a road traffic misdemeanour. Ran his name through the system and he was wanted for something else and lo and behold they opened his boot and discovered an Aladdin's cave!! It was an answer to our prayers to say the least. Especially as my DH was running a Youth Camp the following week and all his work/figures etc were on his laptop You never know something might turn up yet.
Unfortunately cycles being stolen in the area is common . And the police will know who it is .
The saddest thing is your selling up . WHY .
Up to this youve enjoyed camping ? So why let somthing like this stop you enjoying it still .
It might seem hard but its not a good example to your daughter that you allow bad people to rule your life .
Obviously its a horrible experience especially children.
But think of this way. If the person had broken into your shed and stolen the bikes would you sell up and move house?
Learn from your experience in taking security for granted at a campsite. TBH it is something I have done and will now have a think in future.
I would not sell your stuff just yet for a couple of reasons. 1stly the season is pretty much done, you will not get the best price for your equipment.
2014 season is 6 months away, put your stuff away and April May next year hopefully the scare and worry will have past.
I am so, so sorry that this has happened to you, and especially your little girl, how awful for her to have to realise the nastiness that goes on in this world at such a young age.
However I really do agree with the others, don't let this horrible incident spoil your future camping, of course it will have knocked your confidence in the security of campsites, but this really honestly is a rare occurrence.
I do agree with robnchar, your daughter will learn the valuable lesson of resilience if you show that you aren't going to give in to thieves by letting them ruin your holidays together. You clearly enjoy camping, why should the little b******s stop you from doing what you enjoy and choose to do?
I do understand having been a burglary statistic when we lived in London - twice! but it didn't make us move away, that came later when we realised the price of a larger house!
I remember being very, very angry, and I am sure you are too, but fight back and don't let them win.
Give it a bit of time, and don't make a decision too quickly that you might regret.
And have a look at your house insurance, too, a lot of the good policies will cover you for goods taken away from home, especially bikes which are after all designed to be taken away from the home, when our daughter was attacked and had her bike and phone stolen on the way home from college we had a cheque for the value within a week, (and she still cycles to college now!)
Fight back, don't let them make you stop camping.
Jane.

How did the thief's know they were there in the middle of the night,They must of either walked around in day time taking notice of what was about or searched around at night in darkness so must of used torches etc.
either way total scum of the earth

That's we wondered but then decided they must have been around during the day and knew what tent had what, it was that dark and no lights around the park where we camped there can be no other explanation!
Only our weekend tent gone up for sale, we need the money from the sale to pay for the new bike, which now has its own insurance policy courtesy of protect my bubble.com or at least it will when the bike is in our possession. We will still be having our annual Cornwall trip, not letting anyone ruin that for us.
Thankyou for all your kind replies.

My home insurance covers items away from home - including bikes and tent but this was an add on rather part of the standard policy so I paid extra for it. Worth contacting your insurance company just in case. Fingers crossed for you that you may be covered.
I have extended cover for stuff outside the home too.
Hateful thing to happen, I've always felt that crime on campsites was relatively rare.
Aww mate that's not good, really sorry to hear this. As a few others have already said, I hope you shut down for the winter and review the feelings of the family next year.
But please don't give up camping because of this. Don't let the bastards get the better of you!
Last January, I was visiting my daughter's grave. I had armfuls of flowers and candles so left my handbag concealed in the car. While I was there, some scumbag broke into my car and took my bag, which had my phone in it and all my credit cards.
It made me afraid to visit my daughter's grave. But I couldn't NOT visit her either, it's the only chance I get to "chat" to her and keep it looking nice. So I went back. I leave my handbag at home, where possible but I haven't stopped going. And the robbery is now just an unpleasant memory, a token of how very nasty some people can be but you can't let them get the better of you.
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
