Haven't compared it to the concertina type, or for that matter with the Royal version in the link, but the original design is quite stable as the lower part of the legs clip over lugs on the inside of the lower tier's edge. If you follow my link within this thread, bridgeywidge gives a better explanation!

You are quite right Mucker too busy dreaming of my Karsten and willing it to arrive a bit quicker so i can give it a maiden voyage before the winter. That and me old age and possibly a visit due to specsavers!!

If it helps, I have had two suitcase stoves (one HiGear and one BrightSpark) and found them both to be of rubbish quality. I know some swear by them, but I wouldn't buy another. I also have a Sunngas double burner with grill and have never had a problem with it. I also find the gas cartridges for the suitcase stoves run out far too quickly when making several cups of tea each day.
I do have a double campingaz stove aswell which i run off a campingaz 907 cylinder. To save a few pennies i managed to get an empty cylinder out of the freeads newspaper for £5 and then took this to the camping shop for a refill.( They don't actually refill them there, just exchange the cylinder for a full one) Cheaper than buying a full one from new which was silly money.
I'm quite happy to use a very old Camping Gaz (two words in those days) double-burner-and-grill when I've got space to carry it and the gas cylinder (ie rarely!) and intend staying on the same site for a week or so (equally rarely), but usually take a well-used suitcase stove to which I've occasionally had to make the odd minor adjustment, but nothing a Swiss-Army-type-Knife couldn't fix.

If not, I suggest you get one suitcase stove - and possibly an Esbit compact folding solid fuel burner for emergencies (like caffeine deprivation when you've used the last gas cartridge) - then buy the larger stove if you find you need it. The suitcase stove will still have its uses being light enough to carry to the beach, for instance.

We have used a double burner stove and grill for last 10 years and have just bought a campingaz 400 xcelerate after getting a good deal at halfords. The old kit was £60 for cooker, hose, regulator and bottle of gas a 907. The advantage of the 907 is size of bottles.
Know you pay more for a refii but they last ages. I think the current bottle has done 4 weeks of quite a bit of cooking and 2 of those for boiling kettle too, still about a 1/3 left in it.
Last stove was sunncamp and never able to simmer basically on or off no matter what you did with knob.

What do you think of your xcelerate? Whats the simmer like?
