We take a 2yr old and 5 month old. I don't think you need special equipment, they're happy if you spend time with them. the 2yr old sleeps on a campbed between us so I can tuck her hands into her sleeping bag at night, she has a highlander echo 400 sleeping bag, she had the bebe one but her little sister's now inherited it, I tie it off half way with a shoelace as this is the adults size, another blanket when it's really cold, thermals and pjs. She's at her happiest 'skiddling' and although she would get told off for splashing water everywhere at home, is happy to play at the tent door with the basin, water and a few cups and plates 'washing her dishes'
We tried putting a dvd on the laptop while we pitched the tent, worked a treat, will be using that idea again. (maybe if they have a favourite dvd you could use it so camp is a little familiar).
If they have warm winter gear 'snowsuits, hats, gloves take them, it's always colder in a tent, unless it's the height of summer.
The sachets of syrup porridge are now part of our camp must haves for her breakfast 'She insists'.
It isn't easy letting them help you at their speed but anything they achieve, from hammering in a few tent poles to helping dry the dishes will be remembered for decades.
Most importantly, have fun
Just returned from camping with 1 year old and 3 year old. Same adice as everyone tablet to watch a film while setting up, fluffy pjs with sleeping bag they use at home, a few toys. We chose a site with a pool so after a long day playing at park, took them swimming and they slept better than at home. If you stress, they stress just enjoy spending quality time with the.
