We have the same as jk98 and £5 roll mats to go underneath in cold weather. We've been thinking about getting the double-height airbeds as we're not getting any younger (and the tent is well big enough) but now I've seen the Coleman double comfort .... well, it looks good, doesn't it? We have twin matresses on the double bed at home and that's just wonderful.
We also have big Dutch down minus 5 sleeping bags that zip together. Square ones, not mummy bags. They really need replacing, but what with? We don't want mummy bags and our feet in different compartments and we don't want 2 season caravan bags. Answers on a postcard please:-)
I've actually used a camp-bed since 1999 after a few years of using a roll-mat. We did use an inflatable mattress, but it sprung a leak after just one season's use (not a cheapie either, it was a Royal!)
Does anyone have any experience of the Highlander self-inflating mattresses? There's a couple on this page http://www.elliotts-outdoor.co.uk/shop/9/ and I'm thinking of getting one for when I fly down to a festival to save luggage weight.
Riff cool link loads cheap stuff.
Oh I use one of those aluminium cots due to bad back, very comfortable compared to anything else

Like winhill we now have the aluminium framed "cots"/folding campbeds - because of my bad back & the wife having trouble getting down and up again off the floor we had to stop using airbed. Very comfortable but quite big so need to check size of your inner tent (only just fit inside our frame tent bedroom). Also too high for our Khyam Igloo so have to use cheap lower campbeds (the ones like stretchers on legs) in that. Again wouldn't fit in some smaller tents or even in the bedrooms of many larger tents which seem to be designed purely for airbed use.
I use a very old canvas camp bad. The legs detatch and it rolls up in to quite a nice size when not using it, also quite low, no higher than a normal airbed, and very comfortable.

Try www.outdoorfocus.co.uk We got 2 really warm square bags for a good price there. They were also king sized. Hubby thought that he had lost me the first night we used them with the space they give.
we used the halfords(gelert) built in inflator type airbeds but they were horrible and didnt last too long.
now we have our 2 & 4 yr old on a double airbed(the red and blue sort, not flocked) and me and the missus have the same beds but 2 singles, then we have a rollmat underneath if its a colder night.
You've already had more than enough replies to answer your questions but have a think about home comforts.....
We bough a Coleman inflatable (dual chamber thingy). It's a kingsize with lots of room. We pop on an opened sleeping bag that tops it perfectly then a kingsize fitted sheet, with a king size quilt from home! Oooooooo blissssss! The comfort and fresh air leads to such a good night sleep, even when its quite cold. The Coleman was costly but I tell you what, its heaven! We normally wake up to find the little fellers in with us (twins aged 2 1/2). As for inflating, the little pump fills it in about 10 mins but once the tent is up we start inflating then carry on with other jobs. Its never a bind. Every other night we might top it up a bit.

------------- I’m getting too old for this…but I like it
I bought the Fat Airic last year after suffering on air beds for years. It is very comfy, I never get 'chilly bum' and it doesn't irritate my back problems. I think it's brill!
after a disaster wher our double mattress punctured beyond repair we were forced to spend a night sleeping with just our double duvet under us. we had the best and most comfortable sleep ever. now we take 2 duvets and sleep on them, bliss, then if its unusually cold we have one to cover us as well.

defo airbeds, we found some of the airbeds to be to bouncy, but finally found a lower firmer one, also airbeds are great for having a wrestling war with the kids.

Hi Terry,
Where did you manage to get a king-size Coleman dual chamber airbed from?? I've looked everywhere but not managed to find one.
roll mat for me comfy assuming the ground isnt too hard, one prob with airbeds is that they are so short, me being 6'4". adds to the roughing it experience :-)
We also use the Coleman Double Comfort. The guy at Campingmegastore said to inflate it until you can just feel the floor when you sit on it. It is then at the correct pressure for when you are lying down. We use 2 cheap bedrolls under it for insulation plus a fleece blanket between the air bed and our double sleeping bag. Easter and October we also take a lightweight summer quilt and zip this inside the sleeping bag. We have never had to sleep fully clothed and in sox and hats as is sometimes mentioned on this site. All the layers keep us like toast.

Becca, Thanks! that site has a lovely looking Coleman Hudson double bag that goes to -13! That should keep us snug. Shame they only do mummy bags with down fillings though. We've kinda got used to the luxury
I had a back operation last year - so have to be careful what I sleep on, otherwise I can't move in the morning! We have Robens self inflating mats which are extra thick (10cm I think), and these are fine. Warm & comfortable. When we first camped, within a few months of my op I couldn't manage with the mat on it's own, so actually put it on top of an airbed, for extra softness. Now the mat on it's own is fine though - and I prefer it to the airbed. It also takes up less space in the bedroom compartment, and doesn't need a pump.
