I would also like to say Thanks to Val, without her advise I don't know where we'd be when taking our 7month old and 21/2 year old on their first camping trip in July.
You are a fountain of camping knowledge! Please keep it coming so us "newbies" can learn to be just as knowledgable. Thanks again.
Took our 10 month old camping weekend just gone and he was fine, had a pop up travel cot, Lidl £24, which we bought just for camping and his buggy and he loved it. Remember he will be slightly out of routine and probably go to bed a bit later, don't get paranoid and enjoy yourself and he will himself.
We have taken our little one, now 7 months old, away 3 times this year. His Bumbo has been invaluable, and not just for camping, as has his blow up ring that he plays in and also serves as a place for his toys. He sleeps in a Samsonite Pop-up (Literally...!!!) Travel cot in a Vango Nitestar. The Nitestar is very snug but I think he was a bit warm in it this weekend. We also have an all-in-one polartec fleece suit that keeps him warm when its chilly. My OH is breast feeding, which has helped no end, but we use a cold water steriliser for his bowls, spoons etc. A roll of cling film is a must for keeping things clean once sterilised. The hardest thing is getting him to settle when its light in the tent. (We have a Montana 6 which is loads lighter than our old Tri-Space). We have taken to draping a travel blanket over the top of his travel cot to try to darken it for him. (We leave the side unzipped) Another good addition (If you use a EHU) is an electric kettle, simply because it boils quicker. Although you could fill a thermos last thing at night I suppose. Oh and one other thing...a bigger car, roof box and trailer because babies dont travel light...!!!
if you are thinking about buying a sleeping bag then try buying a mummy style one then some nappy pins and fold over the excess and pin. the child then will have a comfy surface to sleep on without the worries of the kids falling down into the sleeping bags.
We also resorted to a harness and attaching my youngest. But then he was crawling at 5.5months and walking at 7.5 months (I kid ye not!) I really wish he'd sat still for a lot longer as he had no concept of danger at all.
Ciaran at 5.5 months old.
Really though, the best advice is don't worry too much about 'normal' routine (mine sleep far better at camp, although they go to bed later), relax and enjoy!
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
