just a little different point of view on this topic
myself and my partner started Tenting last year and the opinion of us is " so what if the weather is **** we are exploring our fantastic British coast lines and countryside."
Now i would put that head and shoulders above travelling on a package holiday and lying in the sun all day.
One day (maybe) the tide will turn and holidayers will forget about the tan lines and get a waterproof and explore our Islands but I dont hold my breath
I would love nothing better than everyone who ONLY camps because its fashionable or 'cos its cheap' would get bored and go back to package holidays and leave those of us who do for the love of it in peace!!

I must be having a turn I completely agree for once with Skatty
I must say I DO wish there was a tiny chance we could, on a Thursday, note that the weekend weather looks 'set fair' then NOT have to spend 2 hours on the phone trying to find somewhere to go! You have to book WEEKS in advance! Nothing spontaneous about camping around Hampshire!
I'm a wavering camper, I have to confess. I, too, am TIRED of the English summers. For me (as the missus) it's SO much effort pulling it all together for the trip only to have to spend HOURS of each day, whilst there, attempting to keep the INSIDE of the tent relatively dry- sod clean! By day 3, it's soggy towels, every item of clothing damp, borderline sleeping bags etc. IF it were just me and the man- fine, but days on end of Dealing With This as mummy to 2 sons, 7 and 9, Where's Me holiday??
it wont die out it will be forced out ,motorhomes are far more lucrative year round than tents for a few summer months.
then the biggest club is branching into holiday homes which probably take tent places up etc.
the small sites will still exist but larger ones will provide far more entertainment than tenters need ,camping was a cheap holiday! already its getting more expensive knowing that foreign holidays will get less as oil prices effect plane journey prices.
People have lived, holidayed under canvas in one form or another for as long as there have been skins to drape on branches, I believe there will always be those who prefer the camping experience and as purses get tighter there may well be an upturn towards it again. Hopefully as suggested the companies who make tents will take a tip from the past and start to build better quality equipment for campers to use, tents that will stand up to all weathers are available but not in the mainstream, I think that will change if the weather keeps changing at the rate it is.
Towing caravans or motorhomes, is already feeling the pinch with the cost of fuel etc. I know if we plan to go any great distance it will be back to a trailer and tent, probably a frame tent as I still reckon they are the best for all weathers.
If the cost of fuel continues to rise a reckon we will all end up back in tents catching a train to Loch lomond, the Highlands, Lake District and Norfolk Broads to name a few. Maybe tents are the future.

My inspiration is partly Ray Mears, but about the only thing we have in common is the knife and firestarter I bought from his website.
(though I have so far not managed to light a fire and I cut myself on the knife before I used it. )
Absolutely brilliant, at least you have two things in common with him then! lol
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
