We have quite comfortable beds in our small campervan but I never slept 'properly'. We use sleeping bags and I always felt I was sliding about and the bag 'moved' around in the night as I moved. I have changed my sleeping bag for one made with a cotton outer instead of nylon. It also has a cowl which holds the pillow in place and puffed up and I now feel like I am on a real bed and feel much more cosy and soft.
I totally agree with those who advocate the use of air beds; it has transformed my camping experience. I suffered with years from a back problem and never had a good nights sleep, but put up with it as I love camping. Then I got a cheap air bed from Decathlon (6euros) whilst touring in France a few years ago. Never had a bad night since.
But I do empathise with Mandibren, Neelie, Tinatyke et al. It took me 10 years to convince my OH to try camping. It wasn't the mattress that was the problem but the toilet and shower blocks. So now I seek out sites with good facilities and everyone is happy. My better half will now camp in any weather at any time of year providing the showers are hot and the toilets are clean.
Maybe a UKcampsite rally could be organised for all those who find they have to camp without their OH.
------------- We don't see things as they are, but as we are.
Well you could just go camping for years convince yourself he really likes it and then get divorced about 10 years later with him citing amongst other things that he hated going camping and wanted to go on a proper holiday even though he appeared to enjoy himself while away .............
Can I share my experience? Like your husband I like everything about camping except for the sleeping or lack of it. We are new to the game having sold our caravan. The caravan bed was never comfortable but bearable. First trip camping the Lakes cheapo tent and 3cm self-inflaters from costco. Loved the site - Langdale, tent fine, sleeping not. Woke up crying second night in pain with shoulders/back. Off to Yeomans in Windermere for 7cm Outwell inflating mat £30 later better nights sleep - 4 glasses of wine and exhaustion may have helped. Second trip Anglesey with friends fab time but hate the 7cm mat keep slipping off and feel elephants back would be more comfortable. Where to now? After much searching for advice on here decided to take the plunge on a Aero bed. WOW what a difference. Admittedly have only slept on it for one night at home but the comfort was superb. Ready to insulate and off we go to Grizedale in 2 weeks time- fingers crossed only prob kids and other half also want one - they will have to fight me for it!
I love my camping, as does the other half and my son, but I can't sleep on an irbed for some reason ..... much prefer to be on a self inflating mattress or rollmat.
I like to be outdoors and the last two camping trips haven't been great on the weather front, but I'm a believer that your holiday is what you make it ....... and the weather with camping is all part of it.
Three years ago I spent a small fortune for 7 nights in Lanzarote in a private villa with a pool etc. As we walked down the main street, I honestly thought I could have been at any UK seaside location. The best thing about the week was the weather and being totally relaxed!
I've had more fun and enjoyable time since getting a tent, thats for sure and my OH knows that if she said she wasn't going, I'd still go anyway!
this year we lost our el cheapo air bed to a puncture ,went into Yeomans in Northallerton and bought a coleman twin chamber air bed ,absolutely perfect you can set up each side toyour own personal pressure .I like your Husband am not a lover of sleeping in the tent but this new air bed is perfect .The other recommendation i have to make is the bigger size square style sleeping bags by Vango they give you room to move with out fighting the thing all night and still keep you cosy.
------------- love is:walking to the toilet block arm in arm
