You were genuinally interested in the opinions of others and that showed. Sometimes the written word can come across more harshly than intended in posts.
No one is going to mind you asking for opinions or advice.
I dont go in for any type of tent security and think that people get carried away talking about locking tents and putting bells on the zips and fitting mobile alarms
I dont keep anything in the tent worth stealing and if any sad pikey wants to steal what I do take then they are welcome to it
Why not go the whole hog and fit gin traps and trip wire.
The only experience of folks having stuff pinched from their tent is friends of ours on a site near Calais had ther tent cut open (WHILE THEY WERE SLEEPING) and a handbag was removed. This was found the next morning a few yards away. Everything had been turned out and just her mobile phone was taken.
I know this almost beggars belief butI can assure you it is absolutely true. Didn't put them off camping though.
No amount of silly alarms are going to stop this kind of thing.
By all accounts from folks on here and people we have spoken to on sites having stuff stolen is extremely rare.
I certainly don't want to lock myself in or out of my tent. Can't stand locking the car.

In nearly 30 years of camping | have never had a single item pinched; I think camping is one of the few areas of social life where some old fashioned levels of trust can still be found, as long as you stick to some commonsense rules, like keeping valuables locked in the car, don't take anything on hol that is irreplaceably valuable to you, and don't lock the tent zip as that is an absolute no-no from a fire safety point of view.
You will find that camping on reputable sites ( for which the reviews on here are great) means that neighborus look out for each other. We have even had washing brought in for us when the rain started whilst we were off on as trip!
Must agree with you there Foggers,never had anything pinched even when we were invaded by ..ahem.....travelling folks on a site we have used many a time, never did anything disappear from our tent or surrounding area, it fact one of the guys came over to ask us if we would like some of the fish he had caught that day for our BBQ and then left payment for their pitch with us as they were leaving too early in the morning for to pay the owner.
1. For every rise of 10db (A) the volume of loudness increase by 100% i.e. doubles.
2. A rock concert is deemed to generate 120db (A). This alarm is twice as loud?!
3. 10m away from a jet engine is said to generate 150db (A).
4. Is a gadget costing less than £10 capable of producing such a devasting sound?
5 Possibly more to the point, if this thing was to go off whilst you were out could you expect anything else other than to find your tent sliced to pieces and the demonic box smashed to pieces upon your return and a large group of deeply p1ssed off campers wishing a word in your shell like?
OH had rather nice board shorts nicked off the washing line when we were camping in France and friend had wetsuit nicked from site in Wales, both from outside tent though! Definitey oportunistic theft as had expensive bikes, surf and body boards outside too and cooker and BBQ live outside. Prefer to think the best of folk and take a chance
IF THEY WANT TO GET IN YOUT TENT THEY WIILL DO WHATEVER YOU DO. WE CAME BACK FROM ABROAD RECENTLY AT A LOVELY SMALL FAMILY SITE. WHILST OUT , SOMEONE CUT THROUGH A TEN FOOT HIGH WIRE FENCE , THEN THROUGH A THICK BAMBOO FENCE TO GET TO OUR TENT. THEY THEN SLASHED THROUGH THE BBEDROOM AREA AND GOT IN.
Its happened to us, at a lovely site, with great reviews, but situated in town. The pulled out a couple of pegs and slid into the tent. I'm pretty sure if anyone used the zips I'd wake up! My advice as always on these topics is to unpack as much as possible. These people are opportunists and will grab whats easy and likely looking. An empty bag, suncreams, batteries etc aren't very attractive, but packed in a bag they might be valuable. Everyone says 'we don't leave valuables in the tent' but its amazing how those everyday bits and bobs mount up; our friends pitched next to us at the time lost all their cooking gear!

***************************************************************************** I hope you don't feel that you have to justify your post, it is a good and helpful subject particularly for new campers who may think as you did. Also it has helped you reach a good decission, you could easily have gone and bought these thinking it was the right thing to do and end up feeling bad after them going off and annoying fellow campers.
I'm a new camper (not even picked up the tent yet!) and I'm also a Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinator for my street, (licence to twitch curtains my hubby says!) so I was interested in what to do (if anything) about security. Now i know!

i have a wooden croaking frog that i was given years ago. Hadn't thought to use it as an alarm. I am not sure it would make more noise than the horses that try and get into your tent in the new forest though :(
