We try, not always with success, to spread the cost of buying stuff, instead of having to spend a lot in June. I keep an eye open at car boot sales and in the local paper small-adds. Recent bargains: a kettle, a coffee cone and a 12 volt hairdryer for 50 pence each, cast-iron frying pan for £1, airbed and pump for £2, nearly full Camping Gaz 907 cylinder for £5, and a hardly used tent for a third of its new price.

Buying a second-hand tent need not be so very risky. Lots of people try camping once and then give up, especially after a wet summer. So there are plenty of almost-new tents up for sale.

Best budget camping advice: buy a really good quality tent and you'll still be using it long after you've forgotten how much you paid for it.

This year so far, (with hopefully one trip to go) we have spent around £90 on fuel and £72 on pitch fees. Had to buy a new tent though £100

I think the saving odd pennies and pounds is a great idea. Wifey calls it my "fob" (and yes.....I hide it......it don't exist  )
