Since we started camping last year was the first time that for at least one break I did not go solo with the kids - and that was due the the fact that both my brother and father were seriously ill ,and sadly both passed away. Up until the point my brother was admitted to hospital and I had to care for my elderly father Ihad planned to go solo with the kdis. I just go to familty friendly sites. I do keep a sharp knife handy - but this is more for and emergeny tent ripper rather than the thought of being attacked,
If your feel comfortable going solo then why stop, simply because of what other people think. If I listened to what some people had said about camping I would never step foot inside a tent again, never mind go solo with the kids and have a great time.
When I been on my own with 2 small children, ive never bothered about being alone its always been about the weather and will my tent still be standing in the morning
I solo camp all the time and haven't ever worried about personal safety. I'd love to wild camp but I know that would be going too far for me, I can't imagine sleeping very soundly.

When I go solo camping my only fear is the lone females in the other tents...I have to put a padlock on my tent door at night
Is that to stop them coming in to stop your really loud snoring Bob!?

Don't be silly - it's to protect the lone females. Haven't you heard about Bob's sleepwalking habit?
i go solo camping year round and i think the liklihood of being attacked is minimal. only once was i scred and only because the barman announced to the pub i was on my own camping next to the car park (second trip).
it didnt put me off and i think most people are more taken aback at a 5foot nothing slip of a thing emerging from a tent in the snow looking like a scarecrow!
Although I'm a lone male camper I have experienced some similar reactions from various people I know. I don't think it matters to be frank as long as you're sensible, for example if you mostly stick to recognised camp-sites.
I would take my pets but two cats would hog the sleeping bag all night, complain at all the walking I do and moan about the diet...
My daughter and I brought Dyson, our Westie, so that we would have that extra reassurance - We chose a dog that would fit in the footwell of my Mazda 2 - The rest of the car is choc-a-bloc with the gear!
