I think its about making the dog comfortable & safe
I took my rescued English Bull Terrier away for the 1st time last year in a 5 man tent & there were 2 adults. He was on a corkscrew most of the day, & at night he was in the large Pod with us on HIS bed from home. He knows thats where he sleeps.
The main problem I found was that he was always trying to get out of the tent as it didn't have a SIG. So I went out & got a bigger tent that has. We have been away 5 times this year in the new tent & he has been as good as gold on the corkscrew & on his bed.
I got the plastic covered lead from Pets at Home to go on the corkscrew & he hasn't tried to chew it once

Bigger dogs don't fit through the gaps that JR's do! Have your dogs mastered the combat crawl? What with that and his incessant fly/wasp/spider chasing, we don't stand a chance.
lol zenobia! my lurcher kept us enrertained this weekend with his magnificent fly catching skills, he's a springy bugger and will launch himself into the air regardless of the fact he's tied up to catch them pesky flies, he'll also catch wasps and never learns that they sting and hurt him, silly boy!
There has been so many posts about dogs on here before including one from myself. Our mini Schnauzer is 10 months now and this has been his first year camping. A crate is a must (if your dog is used to it) We have had a crate for Alvin since getting him at 8 weeks, he has a dog bed and blanket in it. It is his den at home and camping. In the day time he is tethered outside and we put his crate outside and he wanders into it as and when he wants. (I think he goes in for a bit of peace) At night he is in his crate but because he is used to it, he doesn't know any different.
If you haven't got the dog yet I would seriously think about a crate (if it is a puppy). The dog gets used to it as his bed. Now We tried taking Alvins crate away and just leaving his bed in its place but he didn't know what to do with himself and was looking for it so we gave him it back.
We also use a delta peg to tether ours. Last weekend the ground was so hard we couldn't get the corkscrew in the ground. Just a tip.

I dont have to worry about Kia trying to escape, she has so much fun and fresh air during the day that we never hear a peep out of her at night!
