Oh dear. All that risky behaviour when we had our FC with stove, grill, and oven, all inside. We should have taken the whole thing outside, I see that now.
We're adults. We evaluate risk, and take appropriate care.

With respect, can I enquire just exactly how much is "adequate ventilation". One open vent at front and back? All doors and windows open? (Defeating the object, of course, where heaters are concerned). Is it a case of so much "fresh air" to the square foot, or do we just wait until the morning, to see if we wake up dead?
I've read something about blue flames/yellow flames. If this was clarified, and proved a good check point, preferably a definitive check point, then it may be more helpful than just advising people "to be sensible/careful".
If folk are not sensible or careful enough, nobody will actually know, until it's too late.
We can be sensible with gas leaks..... smell gas, turn off, take it outside, find leak, sort it out, check it out, use again (or bin it, of course, depending on the problem).
Not quite that simple with CO, apparently!
Sorry to be harsh, but for something so deadly, and undetectable, there seems to be a rather large grey area, open to interpretation.

The problem with the blue/yellow flame idea, is it might be blue, but it might turn yellow later while you take a quick nap! And carbon monoxide kills rapidly.
Also, for heaters, I don't think you can tell very well, as the ceramic back tends to go red coloured causing the infrared heating process.
It's more just a method so you know that there is complete combustion of fuel. If the flame is flickering with yellow bits, there's not enough oxygen.

Exactly mike, your correct. We evaluate risk and take appropriate care.
I think the vast majority must do. Otherwise, incidents would be more common, taking into consideration how many people go camping.

I had used a butane gas heater that is designed for indoor use with low oxygen detector and other safety features in my Khyam Excelsior XL (polyester, no SIG, very draughty) as well as the Hypercamp Escala 4 (canvas with a ZIG) in the past, and survived to tell the tales. And yes, I did evaluated all the risks, and made sure it was on a sturdy platform, away from the tent fabrics, away from the dog, and did not leave it on unattended, and never inside the bedroom etc...
I bought a Coleman Bluecat thinking I could use it inside my Khyam Freelander (polyester, no SIG), and decided against it when I read the instructions stipulating it is for outdoor use only. It sits in the garage unloved.
I found the Escala 4 very good at retaining heat, and had not needed to use the gas heater in it since. It is very cold, I just put on another layer and wear my walking boots until I go to bed instead of the Crocs.
