I think as Autopilot says more people from more varied walks of life are camping now, I would imagine the person from the big city where you tend to keep yourself to yourself, is more likely to do that whilst away too. It's not being unfriendly it's just breaking out of your normal routine.

The more backwater ramshackle affairs tend to attract more friendly people in my experience. The bigger more sterile sites less so - more of the straightlaced outdoorsy families in their matching Berghaus zip ups. Black for dad, blue for the boys, and mum and the girls in suspiciously ever clean pastel pink.
Those families won't even look at us - we smoke roll ups outside the tent.
