i have just sent off for a UCO candle lantern.i don't know what they are like, but they have pretty good reviews.the light will not be the brightest,as it uses one candle.but it has a beautiful warm candle glow in the pictures i've seen.when it arrives,i will let you know if it's any good.apparently, the design makes a candle last for 5 hours, and the manufacturers claim,it can make a simple 5 - 6 inch houshold candle last for 9 hours.
I bought some personal clip to the page torches in 'The Works' Book shop. Very small and cheap - battries included. Haven't had a chance to try them out whilst camping yet
just a quick update.the UCO candle lantern arrived today.
i have tried inserting ordinary household candles: prices 5 - 6 inch candles, into it.it's a genuine no go.the candles have to be a certain width and height in order to work.the candles must be 90.50 mm wide in circumference and 90.50 mm in height.it means the only candles that will fit it are the UCO candles,at £3.00 for a pack of 3.
the normal light weight thinner household candles, are pushed up by the spring piston,so the top wick of the candle is flat against the roof of the chimney, making it practically impossible to light.i tried lighting the candle, and then inserting it into the glass chimney body, but as soon as the wick and flame touched the top of the chimney,it went out.the bushlite candle lantern is exactly the same design.so i guess,in order to use both makes of candle lantern, people will have to seriously stock up on their own make of candles,at £3.00 for a pack of 3,excluding postage.personally,i think this makes them extremely impractical for campers, especially if a person runs out or looses their candles.there is no way on earth anyone will find these candles with their dimensions in any shops in the u.k.i can only assume, they are designed for household candles in america and australia.
