Interesting thread, and had me a little concerned after our car looking very well laden with roofbox on our last trip.
Have just looked ours up though and I have 630kg to play with (we have a Grand Scenic) and as the only people in the car that weigh anything are me and hubby I don't think I need to worry too much about the rest of the stuff going in there.
Wonder if the MIL realises about it though with her many IKEA purchases she makes then stuffs in the car to take back to the Isle of Man, I'm fairly certain they are well over the load limits on their car at times
we have a 5 seater scenic we take 1 rear seat and have 2 adults in front and 1 12yr old in back, the boot is packed to the roof and so is the area where the seat is taken out, we then have 540 litre roof box full to brim with light stuff, the tent alone is about 65kg. we have 580 kg allowance we have plenty. Very surprised what weight the scenic can carry
i think people are worried over nothing, if the police pull you they obviously haven't anything better to do. Think the only people who are going to get pulled over are the ones with cars with back ends which are nearly scrapping on floor and wheels nearly rubbing on wheel arches, thats the folk who have a full car of passengers a rammed boot, a full roof box and 5 bikes and towing. You see far too often but these are taking too much. Have a look while your loading.
I now have a very upset daughter who is muttering rude words about people who panic over what things weigh but have done the weighing and find I have about 145 kg to spare. Now what can I buy that weighs about 145kg?
Just found some more spare weight. We had counted both the Montana 6 and the Khyam but we only take on or the other. You can tell why I didn't do well in maths at school can't you.
I think it is generally agreed that camping gear packed in a car is unlikely to take it over the weight limit. But the real danger is that many people do not secure the load. Thus is in the event of a accident, the items can fly forward with horrendous consequences.
