By and large the Met Office provides a good service to its main customers: us (the public); aviation; shipping; the military.
If you want a reasonably accurate prediction of what the weather will probably be for the next 24-36 hours, ask the Met Office. But if you want an exact 100% accurate forecast (or want 24-hour certainty for a week's time) you need a Mystic Meg charlatan, not a weatherman.
Sorry Skip skep, have to disagree about the good service, I think it's pretty atrocious, sad decline since they did away with lots of weather stations and the collection of info from merchant vessels, the coastguard etc.
Edit to say .. to be more accurate did away with a lot of that. Most of the coastguard station in Scotland are now closed down for example, and I think there's only one that's permanently manned.
We had 60mph gusts camping at hopleys last November - While I can't exactly encourage anyone to try these and it wasn't a particlularly pleasureable experience (we were crapping it), it does give you an awful lot of faith in your tent (it was the Cabanon Barbados) when you get through the weather to the next day
The only problem I would have with 30mph ones is it's a pain to pitch in the wind, but providing you have a decent tent and it's pitched and guyed down ok you will be fine

Now the topic has turned into yet another brickbats-and-bouquets for-and-against Delta pegs thread.
At this rate, we'll need a separate section devoted to Delta ground anchors. Or a separate Forum? Or even a separate internet (running in a strange parallel universe where the stronger the wind the more stable tents become and Delta pegs are only used in really calm weather).
Poor Mr Orr. He makes a good product to do a necessary job. Yet despite wide approbation and strong customer loyalty, he still has to spend hours defending his business against (often unwarranted) criticism and attack.
Hear hear, getting pretty fed up with it to be honest, and not going to put up with any more of it.
Just reading through the posts and it reminded me of when I used to have a seasonal touring caravan, we went to skirlington (east yorkshire) for two weeks and put up an old brown and cream awning, midweek one evening we had really strong winds, the type where you felt like the caravan was going to tip up, and that night a bloke walked past and said to his wife "I bet that won't be up in the morning" looking at our awning, much to my amusement, our awning was still stood strong, with no damage whatsoever, and his brand new acrylic bradcott was wrapped round his ariel :0).
I am also going camping with the tent this week, and it has given out for strong winds, but I think its just a case of trial and error, if you really want to go away with peace of mind, maybe you should look for a caravan to rent?
