Hi Val (and anyone else who has a kitchen/pup/utility tent),
I have read a couple of your replies where you have said you use a kitchen tent, in one thread a day or two ago, someone did ask if you were charged for two pitches as you had two tents but I don't remember seeing anyone reply.
What is your experience of sites charging for tents/pitches, after my hedgehog experience a kitchen tent sounds great.
According to my Hubby, I just hang by my toes from the rafters and dry my wings off......
Kitchen tent? Mine is an older SunnCamp and is 1.8 x 2.0 m approx. (Pix in profile.) It`s got an internal frame so I can hng a larder, pocket organiser and small airing rack inside. It`s quite bulky when packed though. The Outdoor Revolution one sold through this site is smaller at about 1.4 x2.0 m and has an external pole frame, but according to Merry Terrier, it packs really small. She`s got a pix of her`s in her profile.
As to charges, I look on the campsite list when booking and if I see the words "auxiliary tent" I stump up for the nominal £1 or £2 a night for it. It`s worth this IMHO. If I see charges for pup tents, gazebos or day tents? Well, I take the kitchen tent and would pay if asked. No-one has ever asked. I`ve had numerous conversations with campsite owners that think they`re a great idea, mind, especially if it means folk don`t bring such huge tents as are currently popular, pitch up within 6" of their neighbours and then cook inside their tents. Saves the grass too if you bring a smaller tent and a kitchen tent, because kitchen tents don`t have groundsheets. (Too slippy.)So on the whole, I think campsite owners are pretty favourable to kitchen tents.
And no-one has ever suggested I need a second pitch for it. It`s quite clearly not a sleeping tent.
Have been trying to decide between Outdoor revolution utility tent or the Sunncamp one in Vals gallery. I like the idea of hanging the tent tidy from the inside frame. When I have seen these up the Sunncamp one seems sturdier??
------------- SHIRLZ
I'm not a complete idiot...some bits are missing.
I can`t comment on the sturdyness of the OR but the Sunncamp is very robust. It`s stood up to some pretty bad weather. It`s also extremely useful to be able to hang things up inside.
A couple of pointers though when choosing a kitchen tent, based on what`s wrong with mine. (Which is an older, discontinued model) Flat roofs collect water, so look for one which slopes. Look for a rear window that zips or toggles shut...mine has inadequate velcro! And it`s useful to be able to pole out the door to make a sun canopy or give a little more rain protection. I had to add eyelets and scrounge an old set of awning poles because mine didn`t do this originally.

You cook hedgehogs?

I've got the same version of the Sunncamp that Val has, again we've never been charged but in reality we don't often go to "that kind of site".
Ours has the same problem with water pooling on the roof as Val's and last year we managed to damage a seam due to the weight of the water on top of the tent overnight.
I've repaired it with tenatious tape and sadly it seems ready to face another season (I really wanted it to be scrap so I could buy a Cabanon one!).
The Sunncamp has a fairly large pack size - the utility pack size is bigger than the Sunncamp dayroom pack size where as MT's OR one really is teeny tiny packed up.
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
