i'm looking for a lantern to light our tent at night, and have come across various solar powered ones.. seems like a good deal to me - charges for free during the day, lights the tent at night.. does anyone use them? how good are they?  - and are there any partiular ones anyone can reccomend?

We have the small garden solar lights - bought 10 of them from Wyvale Garden Centre for £30.  They are useful to put round the tent so you can spot your tent from a distance and see guy ropes when it's dark.

Having 10 you can also take a couple of them inside for some light - depends what you want.  They don't give off a lot of light - more of a 'night light' effect so good if you have little ones that don't like the dark as you can leave them on all night.  Not really enough to read from unless you were holding one up close.

They keep going for about 8 hours on full charge and as you say free to charge and useful if you don't have EHU.

Hope this helps

Thanks - yes - these'd be good outside the tent - might keep my eyes open.. i was thinking more of a lantern to hang inside the tent - something that'd hopefully give out a decent amount of light - enough to find the wine anyway.. something like this.

cheers

i think you would find that taht would only throw off the same amount of light as one of the garden ones
there are some solar one`s that use a different bulb that is quite bright but don`t know what they are called

Well i am a newbie to but i have been looking at Solar lights, but alas while they have potential i am beginning to think that there are no real long hour life bright ones, unless you spend above the  £80 pound mark and you have to get and carry around a Car Battery and large watt Solar Panel.

Solar either needs a big technical  improvement or they need to rethink whats on offer for Campers/Pattio in UK  (IMHO). Its a Uk Market  not served or just not enough Demand?

Unless someone out there knows better.

Woolworths are doing a £9.99 latern with Led lights but I think i read somewhere that people compared it to a Solar garden lamp..

Netto had a £7.99 wind-up Led Lantern but again some commented on the internet thats  its more like a night light or Garden Solar light in brightness. 1 min wind 25 mins light if i recall right.

Alot of the China Manufactures do make Camping lanterns with solar panel but either they are not very suited to our climate or to dear  or thier light effect poor I am not sure as you Don't see them on sale in UK  except for the rare ones on Ebay.  Anyone out there experience of these Lamps, and able to comment on thier lighting effectivenes?

Its that Man with nothing better to do again!

I know sad aint I

Been to Bury went in pound land to buy wild bird food (forgot to get it when in wilkingsons (all good camping gear soldout) )

Went in poundLand,  i noticed they had a Plastic red and white Camping Lamp on sale in a little box. It takes 4 AA batteries and runs a torch bulb, no fancy LEDS. well what the hell a quid thinks I and buys one (they had them on sale near the inflatables)

Now my thinking goes i have rechargable AA Batteries  and I have a Exide solar charger so i can just recharge battries in that. Or if someone already has one of the AA standard battries rechargers.  Ideal for a back up light for in a Two - Three Man tent , or a Bedroom..  Do Not know how long it would run though on a charge guess two hours would be good.

They also do those button lights ( small round lights with three or two LED'S in ), at times but they take 3 AAA batteries and my solar does not charge them. Takes it long enough to do 4 AA battries.

They even sell packs of rechargeable AA batteries (800mah,  I think.)

I've got one of these and the 24 LED version. I have to admit they are amazing! The amount of light off these is outstanding. One is bright enough to light up the inside of a tent. They take 4 AA batteries which last for between 25-30. In my opinion a really good buy.

I find that these are ample. http://www.blacks.co.uk/blacks.storefront/product/BLKSuperCamping/BLK-SS06-Camping-Accessories/094851.aspx

They also do them in store with three lights as well.

So much for my bright idea tried Lantern with full set of 4 x AA batteries fully charged. Batteries flat in 30 mins
