We cancelled this weekends camping trip due to rubbish weather !
We are still mentally scarred from a trip to callow top last year which was like camping in a swamp !
However ........ we visited a couple of local sites yesterday during heavy rain and guess what ...... no mud or really soggy field
I then realised its obvious that good drainage is the answer and if a field has this then the rain isnt such a major prob .
So 2 things I now know .......
1/ Callow Top has crap drainage and really does need to sort itself out...its not a cheap site and frankly last years field conditions were a disgrace.
2/ I will now look closer at the underfoot conditions before pitching ........ the rain is no prob its the damm mud thats the headache !
If it looks like rain we try to find a pitch on a slight slope at least midway up the site. On a few sites we've noticed that the grass has been 'forked' to allow the water to get away faster. With the Aspen we have a large porch with seperate groundsheet so muddy shoes are left there but the damned stuff tends to get everywhere. On this basis there may well be an arguement for global warming!
