We've just bought our first tent (we in our late 40s!)

Looking at various pitch sites we have noticed that some sited requires a tent to be pitched on hard standing.

Do we need something for under the integrated ground sheet?. What stops this ground sheet from tearing?

We.re new to this too, well, second time round.

We've bought a tarpaulin from b&q, a large builders one. Folded in half it's about the same size as the groundsheet.

You can also put picnic rugs down inside, that'll help.

Also, with a tarpaulin, if you have any weather related damage while camping, you can throw the tarp over the top and tie it down.

Tents on hardstandings? Are you sure? That`s most unusual.

But if so, you`ll need rock pegs. Normal ones will just bend.

We also thought that hard standing was only for caravans, but I came across a couple of sites that wanted to preserve the grassed areas, and therefore had hard standing. We thought this was unusual.

However, it appears to be a good idea to have a tarp under the SIG anyway for lots of reasons.

We have a Eurohike Buckingham and after reading various topics here, i'm getting a little (only a little at this stage!) concerned re pegs. We cant erect our tent as we have no garden and our practice run will actually be the real thing!!

Have you found that pegs supplied with tents are usually sufficient, or should we invest in something with more bite!

Invest!! The pegs that came with our outwell were fine for a few trips but there were occasions when we needed rock pegs.We only realised this when our pegs bent under the strain. This also made me realise the importance of carrying lots of spares.  We are getting some Deltas before we do our two week break this summer. OH is buying them for my birthday! My non camping friends can't understand my excitement, Claire

The pitch we got for this BH is not hard standing, fortunately

Where do we get Delta pegs?

Talking about presents, for christmas couple of years back, I really, really wanted new hand held mixer (for the small jobs), even showed him one in Currys, etc for about £25.00. Would have been very happy with that.

What did I get?     Electric piano at a cost of approx £2,500!! Only wnated mixer. LOL

I do appreciate it really

I know that Sandy Balls camp site in Dorset has hard standings for tents, but they do provide you with an artificial grass this to cover the gravel. You would still need rock pegs though! When I was enquiring they dd say that the site wardens would help if necessary.

During high season they open up a grassy field for tents.

We've pitched a few times on hardstanding pitches. There are some benefits such as not having to clean mud off groundsheet, although you'd be wise to invest in some picnic rugs and check there's no sharp stones before pitching. Oh, and rock pegs of course, deltas won't be any good unless your guys exceed the size of the pitch.
