Hi all,

Just come back from a windswept and drenched weekend outside Bridlington. I always cook outside but due to the weather yesterday we cooked inside (Campus Yale). We have a normal two ring cooker with camping gaz. I think the tent is large enough and both vents were open. After a while though there was a sooty build up around the gas ring. Does anyone know if this is normal or ever experienced this before. Even taking all precautions i am still not sure it is safe.

Hope everyone had a good weekend.

If there was a sooty deposit around the burner it sounds as though the air inlet was partially blocked, This would also result the flame burning with a yellowy colour instead of blue.  Check the air hole prior to the burner, on some stoves this is adjustable by means of either a screw or a spring clip, the setting may have been accidentally altered which would result in inefficient burning.

I will check that, thanks. I also read somewhere that camping gaz is a mixture of propane and butane and not toxic. Does this mean there is no chance of carbon monoxide poisoning. Sorry if this has been asked a million times but i have two small children and not willing to take any chances.

Regards

Neal

Campingaz is just as toxic as any other gas either in its raw state or what it produces when it burns. However the length of time a cooker will be on for in a normally ventilated tent will not produce harmful levels of carbon monoxide.
