Hi there.

I've just bought a Outwell Norfolk Lake tent which has a polycotton outer.

On the advice of the shop where I bought it, I erected and gave it a through watering (yes, it had stopped raining).

In a few places, the tent seemed to go see-through in a series of small streaks. In one place, where something was touching from the outside, it got wet on the inside (without us touching it).

Is this normal on the first dousing or should I be treat the patches with a water proofing spray?

Any advice or perspectives gratefully received.

We have a Norfolk and I wasn't told to wet it!  The rain did that the first weekend out.  It will let water in if you touch it when it is wet, but didn't notice any water coming in.  I would assume a new tent does not need sealing and would query that with the shop first.

Hi Hummers
The Outwell Lake tents do not perform as well in the wet as the other Outwell tents Their H H is 2000 less. Most tents can leak the first time they get wet The percentage of cotton in the cotton material will swell and close the weave and sowing holes Once it as dried water it again if it leaks then take it back.
Regards
Rex

Hi Rexgrant,

Where did you read about the HH for the lakes?  I thought the cotton tents didn't have HH measurements.  Our Norfolk didn't let a drop of water in even though it seemed to be hit hard by rain last month.

I haven't seen a HH rating anywhere for the Lake tents either.  Asuming it is 3000 then I feel it's a bit misleading to say the tent won't perform as well as other Outwell's in the wet.

My little (polyester) Vango Omega has a HH of 2000.  We went camping in it this weekend in horrible rain and not a drop of water came in.

Now our Outwell Nebraska had a HH of 5000 and leaked like a sieve after 1 hour of light rain in our garden.

It's the seams on polyester tents that are most likely to leak at so a fantastic HH rating isn't going to make any difference.

So I'm pretty sure that if the Norfolk Lake has a HH of 3000 then it would have ample wet weather performance.

Steve

I was thinking the same Steve - no 'taped seams' issues to worry about

Took our Bear Lake out for its maiden spin last week where it really TIPPED down during the nights and apart from the streaking marks that appear first time its wet not a drop of rain got inside. No way is this tent material a HH of 2000!
