hi all ! , after our first trip last weekend we realised (especially coming back ) we did not have much room in the car for all our gear so i have bought a roof box today and hope that solves the problem , thing is , it looked massive when i bought it but now it is fixed to my car i think it looks a bit silly/small , it is a 360 litre one and is on a zafira , can some of you who have one enlighten me to how much you can actually get into one ? , thanks .
------------- just booked our first four camping trips,
highfields , ashbourne , derbyshire.(been and enjoyed it, review posted)
We've got a 360 ltr Fapa box, when I bought was worried might be too big, but now on car could easily have fitted 450 ltr box. As for how much stuff you can fit in we get 2 dbl matresses, picnic rug, large suitcase, 4 sleeping bags, 30" flourescentl lamp, and a few towels on top of case.
You can get in as much as the box will take in volume. The important thing to remember is that the box and your roof rails will have a weight limit which will be between 50 and 75kg dependeant upon make. With this in mind it is obviously best to load all the leightweight but bulky items in the roofbox.

We have the same box, we get a double buggy pushchair in it and all our shoes and soft items. Its meant we have been able to get away with not changing the car with the adition of 2 kids over the past couple of years.
Not sure the size of our roofbox, but I think we got in last weekend:
2 single airbeds
double airbed
electric pump and manual pump
2 directors chairs
2 armless chairs
3-shelf camping larder
cooker shelves and windshield
2-ring gas cooker
bbq
aluminium table
table with 4 chairs attached
tarp
windbreak
folding storage box
and various odds and sods in the gaps.
A lot really...DH has the packing of it down to a fine art and everything except the odd bits stay in it in the garage when we aren't camping which makes packing really easy.
One thing I would advise with these roofboxes...is get some ratchet straps...for added security...especially if you are putting in as many items as the above...Personally, we reserve our roofbox for lightweight but bulky items shuch as shoes, wellies, pillows, fishing nets, windbreaks, washbags and flasks...nothing more than that really.
MAx on most cars is 75kg including the bars and box. time to get the bathroom scales out! As genie04 says get a rachet tie for the box as well. If the box springs open on the road you can and in most cases will be charged for having an unsecured load not to mention losing all your gear. When we used ours we used a tie front to back and one across the way, bit OTT but it kept my mind at rest. Bunging the longer stuff onto the roofbars at either side is a good idea too, you could also have these inside the rachets ties as well. Once its all loaded and tied down you should be able to shake the box and the car will move with it.
Bryan K's avatar is one that has a tad too much on board!
Bought mine recently from Italy, a FARAD 480L and tried it for size on my Wife's Zafira at the weekend. We haven't trial loaded it yet though, saving that for our first trip away next weekend.
It looks good considering how large the capacity is, without looking enormous.
Mind you it'd look pretty silly on my IS200, be like driving underneath a Zeppelin!
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
