I have just been on my first camping trip to Knight Stainforth Hall in the yorkshire dales, i had bought a brand new tent from millets and was not very pleased when i set up camp, the tent wasnt the best i have seen as i had to lift the groundsheet up to keep the water out! also for a two man tent it was small, However i did still enjoy my trip, i had a nice walk into a little town called Settle on the "Ribble Way" route on my OS map, only thing was i crossed over a style and in the next field there were a load of cows loose with no fence dividing the pathway from the cows, i had walked a long way already so i stopped for a bit at the other side of the style to see if the cows would move on, but they didnt, so it was either go back to camp and have a wasted journey or chance it, me being the chancey type i chanced it, across the field i went and the cows didnt bother, further up near Settle i was walking along a gravel track and had my first encounter with a mouse! At night-time i laid in my tent with a cup of tea listening to the owls (which was actually the first time id heard one in real life) and then through the daytime in my spare time i would sit for many an hour looking at the sheep and cows in the adjacent fields and up the hills to what I think is called "smearset" and "smearset copys" enjoyed it and definatley will be going again.
Hi, that all sounds very peaceful. We (myself & OH, our 2 boys and a friend each) have just returned from a very wet and muddy Bug Jam. Not alot of tranquility there!! just lots of mud! but we also had a great weekend.
Thanks for all your replies, paulr783, i am from the city yes, and it is brilliant to get away from it all i used to go caravanning but i have to say camping is the best, and will definatley be returning to this camp would reccomend it to all who asked...
Perhaps it's time to buy a better tent, one with a sown in ground sheet.
If you've taken to camping there is no point being squished up in a leaky tent
Go get the very best you can afford. Try a 'proper' camping shop where they can give you unbiased advice.
Great camping is all about those outdoor (owl/badger/wildlife) moments, oh and don't forget to look up at that great big star filled sky (if you can see it through the rain cloud )
Keep camping

Every day is a gift..That's why it's called the present.
Just back from our first trip as a family, rained like mad, much flooding, but the tent (also Millets) held up well. I'm glad you enjoyed your trip Mr Woo. Was interested to read that you've never heard a owl before - it's funny what you take for granted living in the country. Another thread mentioned red kites, they are more common than sparrows in the Chilterns. Hope you've planned your next trip already!

Oh wow, I wondered what it was like at Pod at the weekend. I live a stone's throw away, and did think it a shame what with the weather being what it was. It is the Mopar Nationals this weekend I think, so hope they have better time of it. Well done for going, and glad you enjoyed yourselves.

I'm glad you had a great first trip, including the cows!
I can't help but wonder if you pitched your tent as well as you might have, if you had to keep lifting your ground sheet to keep the water out? Or were you camped on a slope or gully? I find Millets tents are perfectly decent for ordinary summer lowland camping and their shops are nice and convenient for people to pick camping gear up from.
