The footprint of your tent is the exact shape and size that you tent take up on the ground.the footprint ground sheet is usually made by the makers of tent to the correct spec..

Our Indi 6 has SIG for the bedroom pods and a bath-tub groundsheet for the living area. I also got a cheap blue tarp from B and Q to put underneath. We gave in to the weather and came home early from our holiday yesterday - when we packed up the bottom of the tent was cleaner and drier than the inside, and I think the tarp gave some extra insulation as well. I aslo take one of theose blue IKEA bags to put the tarp in.
We have a SIG (even though the tent is a cheapie), but we always use a B&Q tarp underneath. We also use a cheap carpet covered rubber mat (£2.99 from cheap shop) as a door mat. Takes up no room in the car - this was a tip I pinched from another post. Helped save the tent getting all muddy.
To answer Becky's query - you do need to trim your extra groundsheet down so it is slightly smaller than the SIG - otherwise, as you guessed, rain will gather on the protruding surface and run under the SIG. This creates extra hassle when taking the tent down as your will have a SIG with a wet underside and will risk is making the rest of the tent damp when it is all folded up together.
We don't have any SIG tents, and we either use an extra GS ( preferably the smooth PVC ones at they just hose clean and mud does not get stuck in the weave like it does on the cheaper woven PU ones) or one of those poly sheets that you get at B&Q as a disposable dust sheet.
