HI

Came back from France with wet Monty. Only two days in the bag due to travel arrangements and when we pitched to dry it out it out in the garden it has black spots on the fly sheet which look like mould/mild dew.  Inner is fine.

Not sure what to do.  Tent is now dry.

1 Should we treat it with something incase the mould spreads when packed away.  I have search other threads but views seem to be not to put anything on the fly sheet.

2 Will the mould spread as it has not been killed or will it die off as the tent is now dry.

Thanks

Hi again pomo.
I have found a better site for information.
Google Outdoor magic
If you have trouble navigating the site do it this way.
Google Tent Cleaning, fourth entry down ((Tent Care Cleaning + Maintenance)) will put you on the right page.
Good luck

120 I've had mould spores on my backpacker inner, and I found the best and easiest was to use Vanish Soap bar. Just jently rub the area with damp soap and the spores just ... ... ... ... well ... Vanish!

Hi porno..... don't know wether to tell you this or not....but I think that you should know. My son-in-law had a similar problem with his trailer tent awning. Black spots and mould. I found one or two firms that clean and re-proof tent etc., and all of them said that if the mould is mildew, then they cannot do much with it.I really do hope that your tent has not got mildew!!!!

Hi pomo
David is correct about mildew.you can kill the spores but the chance of it comeing up like new is very slim.the quicker you treat it the more chance their is of getting it clean.

Have just been looking at this info. Am I correct in thinking that if I treat the mould on my flysheet, clean and reproof it, that as the original waterproofing has been affected that I may be prone to leaks?

Are there any alternatives to treating the mould that will not affect the waterproofing?

None that I know of. You could try using pure soap suds and warm water, but I'd still recommend re-proofing the tent afterwards. I have never heard of mould on a nylon fly - I'm guessing yours must be cotton.

I have treated mould on inner tents (both cotton and synthetic) with very dilute chlorine. It kills the spores and bleaches the material. Unfortunately, it also dissolves the material, so application srubbing and rinse must be a rapid afair.
Hydrogen Peroxide should be a similar treatment.

Either of these will bleach your fabric.

It is a nylon fly, so maybe it's not mould. I'm camping in it tomorrow, so I'll give it another inspection.
