Best thing alot of us are using at the moment are the ufo style LED lights available from alot of places.  I got mine off ebay but they also sell them at morrisons and alot of pound shops.

There's an example of them on ebay.  They use 4 AA batteries and last forever.

I use my gas light alot of the time, but when my friends with their little ones come I break out the ufo lights as they are far safer.

Woolworths are selling off solar LED lights for £7.49 (originally 19.99) they can be charged off the mains, 12v cigarette lighter and solar of course.  I got one this summer its great and gives off a lot of light.
