I desperately want a Mazda X-5 but, as he has pointed out, there is no way on God's green earth I could go camping in it!!

Oh WOW!!! You are so my new idols! So - tell me - how do you get the camping equipment in such a tiny boot???
I used to have an MX-5 and often went camping. 1 rucksack and loose things in the boot and We had a boot rack that we'd strap the tent and other rucksack to. We had a five man tent, two fold up chairs and went camping in cornwall for two weeks in it until we had a child. We used a trangia for cooking and didn't have a table or any fancy stuff, and it took about 1 hour to pack it all in, but well wroth it. Got a verso now.
Audi A4 Avant (estate) 1.9tdi, absolutely fantastic car and we can get loads in as well as the dog. Used to have a Ford Focus estate that was perfect for camping too but then my boss saw fit to "treat me" to a BMW 3-series saloon, thanks a bunch! It was useless, sod all boot space and drank petrol like an alcoholic!
Decided to hand the company car back and bought my own, not regretted it once. I now have the exact car Ive wanted for years and intend to run this until it literally falls apart. Only thing I need now is to choose between a roof box or a trailer for our summer camping trip to Cornwall.
Like liana I love my Octavia! We have a big roofbox as well and last year took all stuff needed for a week plus all of us (3 adults, 2 kids)! The people opposite said afterwards that they had been watching in amazement as we all got out and unloaded!!
whatever you choose make sure its a diesel at least 2lt. you need the torque, petrol just does not have the guts for load bearing and hills. i hired a petrol zafira for a trip to york (not camping though), with me, sarah, mum and dad plus luggage the damn thing had no go in it what so ever, lovely drivng postion thats about all, if i were to update (but i'm not as i love my 306 pug est called polly) it would be a volvo v50 2lt diesel, love them. There is only me, sarah and the dog, but we do have a lot of stuff and are now toying with roof box or trailer as i keep buying more stuff, but won't buy a bigger car.

It's the wine that makes me say it
keep the ford. invest in a tow bar, trailer and or roof box. think of the cost of petrol. i have a vectra at the moment but started out with an astra and when i can afford another im going back to the astra!
We have a Land Rover Defender 110. With the wife and I, three kids and a dog, 5 bikes on the MAXX rack, the roof rack fully loaded and the inside space fully utilised I wonder how we ever managed without it. And now the kids want kayaks
