Which model Etrex is it? We have one that's several years old now, the basic jobbie, and it's fine in cloud. The only time it doesn't work (apart from indoors) is in woodland, and even then it'll pick up a signal again if you find a spot where the tree cover isn't quite so dense.

We were thinking of upgrading to one of the all-singing models that can download maps onto, but if they don't work in cloudy weather they're a bit like an ashtray on motorbike.

I wonder if yours might just not be receiving too well?

My e-trex works well enough under cloud cover but will struggle under trees. I've purchased a holder which fits near the top of my rucksack strap and I've managed to maintain a signal even in very cloudy conditions. I have found that if the unit is worn around the neck with the cord provided it does struggle sometimes as it's upside down.

Hi Bob, Great you've got it sussed! Have you tried Geocaching? http://www.geocaching.com/about/

We tend to do a find when we're on one of our treks, and it's good practice with the GPS

Have fun
