My tent ( an Oztent ) has an aluminised ( sp? ) flysheet that goes over the sleeping area of the tent and believe me it makes a massive difference to the temprature in the tent.

thanks for all your replies, got some great tips, ta
do you know, i never even thought about a canvas tent! i used to have a couple that i camped in (an old ridge tent and a dome one wiht inflatable "poles")
the tent we have now is synthetic so likely to get hot, and has a sig which we felt would be handy for when the baby is crawling, and for the dog too, but hadnt thought about the extra ventilation we might have got from not having it
the tent has a nice big door with mesh on it so we'll just leave it open and camp under some shade!
hand held battery fan is a good idea and i'll also bring along a plant spritzer thing to spray on baby (and dog!) if he gets a bit hot
one question about air coolers in tents - dont the site check how much electric you are using, and wont they disapprove of using them? i would imagine they use a lot of electricity?
Hi again rokki
The amount of electricity is limited and varies from campsite to campsite. You'll be able to run a bigish fan but I doubt you could run an air cooler or conditioner.
My Karsten canvas tent has inflatable poles, its magic, nothing for the wind to break.
I'm not knocking the people, when I exclaim about the use of heaters/fans in tents, it's the attitude that I find troubling. It's as if the electricity is paid for, therefore we will make use of as much of it as we please - it's a bit thoughtless. I have the same problem with people taking hairdriers - here we all are, trooping across wet grass in our jammies to use the communal facilities, why the heck is anyone worried about what their hair looks like?!
hi, i find it helps to get up and open a door and windows for blow through as soon as i wake up, then back to bed and things dont get too hot before i want to get up for the day. with such a small baby, i'd say take your own
shade - even just a parasol propped in one of those fold out tables with a hole in the middle will make a huge difference.
canvas is definately cooler, and i bought a cabanon vis-a-vis tent on ebay with a seperate fly sheet (there are two on ebay at the mo) and couldnt believe how much cooler it was even in full sunshine compared to a normal canvas frame tent (which itself is much cooler than a synthetic one if you keep it ventilated).
also makes a huge difference having front & back doors to create blow through whatever material your tent is made from. good luck!!
It's not knocking people, it's simply having an opinion on the matter What would be the point in having a discussion if noone was allowed to express an opinion.!
thanks everyone, think we'll just take our chances on a shady pitch and keep the doors and windows open for as much ventilation as possible - if it really did get too hot we can always head for somewhere cooler in the car for a few hours

Has a different meaning up t'north than it does in Wurzel Land.
OMG, as they say. I'm sorry, but electric cooling fans and air conditioning to cool a TENT? That's right up there with electric heaters for tents when it's "too" cold...on a par with patio heaters for the environmental damage.
This is camping, everyone. Please remember that one of the main delights of camping is being outdoors - and that means learning to cope with whatever it happens to be doing outdoors. If you are too hot or too cold, stay in a house. If too cold, wear more clothes. If too hot and you intend to do a lot of camping, invest in a canvas tent, create some shade with an awning/parasol/sheet and some string, and, my preference, camp near the sea for the lovely sea breezes.
I`ve said this before and I will say it again, PLEASE do not knock people who don`t do things the way you do. If people want to use EHU, electric fans/heates etc to make camping a more enjoyable experience for them, who are we to tell them that`s wrong? As long as they are getting out there, spending quality time with their families and enjoying themselves and doing no harm to anyone else, that`s all that matters. We are all different, so let`s leave each to their own.
The problem is beezers that people who abuse the EHU are harming everyone else - they are harming the environment and in the long run (actually, after seeing how many people have heated their tents ALL NIGHT this year probably in the short run) everyone who camps who wants a little bit of EHU to run a light or a small coolbox will end up paying a fortune as the owners will need to recoup the costs.
At the end of the day its selfish - if everyone takes that attitude then camping with EHU will become an 'elite' holiday as prices go through the roof.
I really, really hope that the campsite owners start charging on meters rather than by the night for EHU - then people can at least choose how much they pay for and those who are trying to 'heat' or 'cool' the great outdoors can pay a premium for the environmental damage they do.
I just don't understand why people who on the face of it would be 'outdoor lovers' are willing to trash the planet. Maybe its because they would actually prefer to be in a 5* hotel with all mod cons, but see camping as the cheaper option?
Surely air conditioning a tent would be very inefficient - a bit like running the air conditioning in your car with the windows open?? same applies to heating - its like trying to heat a conservatory - yes it can be done, but is it sensible???
