As well as having a lamp of some sort for ambient light, we swear by LED headlamps for reading etc as they leave your hands free.
We used our wind-up headlamps for the first time in a tent 2 weeks ago to read by - superb, I was very impressed. Not as uncomfortable as I thought they would be too - I fell asleep with mine still on

Thanks to everyone for the advice.
I did wonder about how safe a gas lantern would be with a tornado (ie my 2 year old!) rushing around or how hot they would get.

Have now got a couple of headlamp lights and will look at all the other lamps that have been suggested/recommended but think I may stick with battery powered lights (like the sound of the LED ones) especially with the younger children around.

Many Thanks once again.

Whatever do you look like winding them up? presumably you take them off your head to wind them?

I had a large maglight for years, nice and solid very comforting when walking to toilets in the dead of night, never had to hit anyone with it luckily,

now we have a dual wind up/rechargeable from car torch, the only trouble is the noise it makes when it is winding down.

Has anyone got a wind up phone charger for camping? are they any good?
