Hi, we are new to camping, been away once and loved it, and are now thinking about taking our summer holiday in our tent. I have read the threads/horror stories! about midges and wondered if anyone out there could give us an idea of what areas they tend to be worse. My eldest reacts really badly to bites and although I know we can't avoid midges etc completely it would make sense not to camp on a site thats known to be plagued by them I really like the look of the C&CC site at Keswick but I'm concerned there might be loads of midges due to the lake.
Hi camping Bunny. Anywhere near rivers and lakes, your going to get midges! I have bad reactions to them too. Piriton helps and there is also a supplement you can take (cant think of it but someone will). Eating Marmite is supposed to help too lol.

go down to bodyshop and get some pure citronella oil, rub it on your forhead wrists and ankles.... it works wonders ! and i spend an awefull lot of time around water
The moon!?! Somewhere with no 'fresh' water, no trees and a constant light breeze. If you find it, let me know! The Northumberland coast is good - constantly breezy, there's a nice site in Dunstan near Craster. The sand flies will take the place of the midges tho'!
Avoid still water - rivers should be ok as mozzies dont lay their eggs in moving water. Use a proper repellent with deet in it like LifeSystems Expedition Plus, citronella never worked for me unless I was to bath in the stuff - they just bite the bits you miss - ears, eybrows etc. - cover up in the early evening, spray everywhere and they should be ok.
Devon - we don't get hardly any .... and they LOVE me! When we lived in Weston Super Mare I got eaten alive by mozzies the size of which I haven't seen since I was in Brazil!!!
