This thread reminds me of when my cousin went camping, her,. hubby and 3 kids. She rang ahead a few weeks before their holiday to check they had pitches available, but did not actually book a pitch. When they got there, they were met with blank stares, as there was no record of their booking .

After a lot of pleading, the campsite managed to find them a small pitch, and then said they could offer different pitches each night for the duration of their stay. In the end, I think they had to pick up their tent and all the equipment, and move it from pitch to pitch each day, depending on which one was free.

Needless to say, she never forgots to book ahead now.

I've heard back from the camp. (This is one of the reasons I won't say which camp as I wouldn't feel right paraphrasing what they say if I was saying which camp).

They say that they have never turned away anyone who arrived by walking, cycling, or bus. However, if people arrive late during busy times it could be that any ground that they could find for me might be stony and/or uneven.

Given that, I think I would go to the camp again. Though, I'd aim to arrive at opening time. I'd avoid busy times if possible. And I'd phone them a few days before to ask how busy they'd be likely to be. And I think I need airbeds in case the ground is uncomfortable.

Sounds good to me, and I agree with phoning just before.  Happy camping
